CYPRESS, TX (KTRK) -- Charges could soon be filed against a dog owner whose pet mauled an infant to death in northwest Harris County over the weekend.
Deputies were called to a home in the 16500 block of Cypress Bridge near Barker Cypress and Huffmeister around 9pm Saturday. Two-week-old Brayden McCollen had been in a swing in a room, alone with the 100 pound dog.
An adult was home at the time with three other children. That person heard the loud noises and ran into the room, but investigators say Brayden had already been badly injured.
The newborn was airlifted to an area hospital, but did not survive.
There is some discrepancy on what kind of dog attacked the baby. Animal control officials say the dog is a Pit Bull. The Harris County Sheriff's Office report has it listed as a Labrador retriever mix, with further specification.
The dog was taken by animal control and will be quarantined for the next 10 days. His fate will be decided after that. According to the family, the dog had never showed any signs of aggression before.
This case is being referred to the Harris County District Attorney's Office to see if charges will be filed.

I read about this first on MSN, my default browser. When I first saw the headline and before I clicked on the article, I thought, “Here we go again, another pitbull attack.” MSN said “labrador mix” as the breed responsible. So that was a surprise.
Only upon coming here did I see it was a pitbull. It is interesting how the press continues to cover up for these dangerous animals.

Nope. I worked with animal control for over a year, I saw dozens of pits.
Some of our friends have a pit. They adopted it from the pound, where it was listed as a “lab mix”. It is clearly a pit. Pounds are filing up with pits, because so many people are dumping them. I don’t know of any homeowners insurance companies that will issue a policy if you own a pit. So apparently some pounds are intentionally misidentifying pits as other breeds to get them adopted.

Uh...no....search the web for breeders who selectively breed purebred pits for size and you’ll find 130 plus pound pit bulls. They are sold as ‘bully pits’ or ‘xxl pits’ and sheesh...they are horrifying to look at. But for what it’s worth, there’s a video somewhere on the web of a 40lb pit bull that killed a horse. They don’t have to be large to kill. A 40lb pit bull could have killed that infant too - but in this case, it was a larger pit.
They also have a color of pit bull specifically bred to look like rottweiler coloring so people can pass their pitt off as a a rottie. So when a 45lb adult ‘rottweiler’ attacked and mauled someone on a bus, commenters to the news article cross linked urls for pit bulls bred to look like rottweilers and asked ‘how many 45lb rotties are there?

The APBT ranges in size from 22 pounds to 110 pounds (rare), with the most common being between 35 - 55 pounds (16-25 kg.), in fact the original APBT’s were between 20 - 40 pounds (9-18 kg.) and were bred small for their main purpose, fighting, These dogs are varying from small to extra large. A very common misconception is that APBT’s are muscle bound (viscous) hulks that weigh in around 85 pounds (39 kg.) and this is generally not the majority, Most of the APBT’s that Are that large have been crossed with another breeds.
Forget what they look like -
Pits and variants are different because 1) they snap in a second for no logical reason and 2) you can’t read ‘em like you can almost every other dog (excepting SharPeis and other mental specialty retards) and 3) they can and will KILL when they snap.
Not all, but MANY are a TREMENDOUS danger to kids.
I advise terminating the breed, neighborhood by neighborhood, using whatever means necessary.
I will tell you sir I am by no means a birdbrain and an animal can snap without ever showing signs of agression beforehand.That is why you never ever allow a child to be alone with a large breed of dog. In the MSN article it stated the parents were there in the room and the dog sniffed the child but attacked and killed it before the parents could get him subdued. It only takes a few seconds for a large breed to kill a fragile newborn.Any dog of any breed is capable of instant agression that can kill or maim.
The choice is easy.......either a pit bull or baby.......not both in the same household at the same time FCOL!! I feel sorry for the dogs because of what humans have bred into them but I also think they should be banned as household pets and this is from an avid animal lover who happens to love babies and children more.
My BIL has a pit that PAWS listed as a Shar-Pei. If that dog is anything but Pit I’m skinny.
and I ain’t skinny.
Training a Pit Rot mix doesn’t seem too difficult.
Or the non-mobile version even.
Owner’s fault. You do not leave a dog unsupervised with an infant.
You don’t leave dogs and children alone together until *BOTH* parties are of sufficient age & maturity to know how to socialize WELL together (dog knows to be gentle with the kid, and kid knows not to pull dog’s tail, etc.)
I’ve always owned Great Danes when we have had a dog.Who in their right mind leaves a child let alone a baby alone with a dog...ANY dog.I would not even leave the room when my 5 yo niece was there even though our dogs let her wallow/lay all over them.If I left the room so did she.
