BLACK ROCK CITY, Nev.The giant Burning Man art festival, in its official manifesto, calls on attendees to exhibit "radical self-reliance" as they camp and frolic on the dry lakebed here for a week every year.
Burning Man's mantra is so compelling that some 50,000 participants have gathered in this rustic setting for the 25th annual rite. But some bourgeois Burners are calling upon more than spiritual vibes to tap their inner self. They've got hired help.
Elsewhere on the desert grounds, Burners wear bikini tops, leather chaps, stilts, gogglesand sometimes nothing at all. They rely on canned food for meals, sleep in the open field under the stars and use portable toilets. Limbs flail at dance-till-dawn parties. People are expected to share and to give gifts to one another. Money is banned. Sort of.
Elon Musk, chief executive of electric-car maker Tesla Motors and co-founder of eBay Inc.'s PayPal unit, is among those eschewing the tent life. He is paying for an elaborate compound consisting of eight recreational vehicles and trailers stocked with food, linens, groceries and other essentials for himself and his friends and family

I have a colleague who used to be a regular there. I walked up to him a few weeks ago and said, “Hey, got your ticket yet? I hear Burning Man has sold out.” “Burning Man sold out years ago,” he growled. Hmm...
I do enjoy watching the burning man webcam every year, just to see what the pampered bourgeois revolutionaries are up to. Sort of like watching a microcosm of the sixties captured under a bell jar.
“Pagan-Chic,” doncha know!
It sounds like “Burning Man” has turned into “Hypocrite Dude”.
There we were - innocent as can be - in Reno last Saturday at the WalMart. The parking lot was packed with these strange hippie-like people. We asked what the heck was going on. “Burning man” man; where have you been? Anyway, it reminded me of my old hippie days only I was not that radical. The shelves inside WalMart were almost bare - the burning-man crowd was buying all the bottled water and beer they could find. An article in the Reno newspaper said every year the burning man crowd is responsible for boosting the economy by millions! Not for me but I don’t care what they do out there in the desert. None of my business. Actually, though, I feel sorry for them if that’s all they can come up with for fun. Sheeeesh.
This thread will be useless WITH pictures.
Burning Man people pride themselves on being eco-friendly. But people in evil RVs go there.
I wonder what the carbon footprint of Burning Man is? How many greenhouse gases are released when they burn the dude at the climax? How many greenhouse gases are released by those who take the private jets to get there?
Do all Burning Man participants buy their carbon credits ahead of time, or do they calculate their footprint afterwards, and pay then? How does that work?
Oh, c’mon now. Nekkid middle-aged hippie wannabes with world-class tissue droop dancing in a drug-induced haze. What could possibly go wrong?
well, they could run out of Viagra or Metamucil, fer instance ;-)
LOL. Post 'em if you must, but I'm outta here..
"Tesla Motors has received approval for about $465 million in low-interest loans from the US Department of Energy to accelerate the production of affordable, fuel-efficient electric vehicles." teslamotors.com
"The Obama Administration will lend Tesla Motors $465 million to build an electric sedan and the battery packs needed to propel it. It's one of three loans totaling almost $8 billion that the Department of Energy awarded today to spur the development of fuel-efficient vehicles." boingboing.net
For $50.00 per carbon credit, I promise to plant trees to offset your blatant use of resources in your endeavor for true self reliance. I take Visa, MC, and Discover.
A mobile Starbucks stand coming soon, I bet...
Wow, selling carbon credits sounds like a great business opportunity.
I wonder if Al Gore has ever thought of getting into that line of work................
Wait just a minute. Good liberals do NOT shop at Wal-Mart. You mean to say that these good liberal hippie types lowered themselves to shop at a Wal-Mart to stock up for Burning Man??????
And what about their carbon footprint to go there????
I will never understand liberals. I guess I should stop trying. But I thought that going to Wal-Mart was a big “no no” to good liberals.
“They rely on canned food for meals”
So how “self-reliant” is that? It takes petroleum, mining, nuke, coal or hydro for the electricity to make their canned meals.
“Burning Man people pride themselves on being eco-friendly. But people in evil RVs go there.”
They also have their own airport, operational only for the length of the festival. I once considered flying in there and camping.
