Forget cash assistance, set up bunks in some old govt building and have 3 meals of soup. See how quick they get on their feet, or at least go stay on someone else’s couch.

Michigan's first-year Republican chief executive said the state will offer exemptions to the limit for those with a disability who can't work, those who care for a disabled spouse or child Look for lots of "disability" scams. Verifying "disability" should be moved out of the grip of "social workers".

Tommy Thompson was Governor of Wisconsin.

Agreed, but just damn, why should anyone get even 48 months? (Yes, I realize that was the compromise, and that conservatives wanted it cut to even fewer months.) I’d say 36 lifetime months, with no more than 12 months in a given 3-year period.

****Verifying “disability” should be moved out of the grip of “social workers”.****
A social worker tried to get my mom on welfare years ago. Mom did not want it and the social worker told her that the more people she got on welfare the better job security the social worker had.
Mom died years ago never having been on welfare or geting food stamps.

I would like to hear a good plan put forth by someone to make drastic cuts in welfare but how do you go about it?

........So.....I get only 48 months of welfare, plus the state 18 weeks of unemployment, plus the federal extention of 99 weeks of unemployment, ........and thats all I get?
That is only 6 1/2 years!
How the heck can I get a job with 6 1/2 years of blank on my resume?
How long do I have to wait until the SSI monthly checks start coming?

Fat chance making that stick. The uproar from the welfare lobby will be immense as time limits elapse.

Michigan's first-year Republican chief executive said the state will offer exemptions to the limit for those with a disability who can't work, those who care for a disabled spouse or child and those who are 65 or older and don't qualify for Social Security benefits or receive very low benefits.
I think that is pretty weak. Does anybody know how many disabilities there are? There are tons. As a Republican, he could do better.

for the poor to warn that tens of thousands of residents will find themselves without cash assistance on Oct. 1. That's the whole point of it. They will have to actually WORK for a some of their luxuries. Expect beer sales, scratch off lotto ticket sales, tobacco sales, red box video rentals, and wine sales to slump starting Oct 1.

I've always thought shuttered military bases, with the barrack and canteen facilities already there would be good locations to house homeless/welfare/natural disaster victims/etc.
But I'm sure some ambulance chaser or ACLU type would sue over something.
