DEA Announces Emergency Ban on Bath Salts
ABC News ^ | Sept. 7, 2011 | LEE FERRAN

Posted on 09/07/2011 3:04:27 PM PDT by Beaten Valve

The Drug Enforcement Administration said today it will use its emergency authority to ban chemicals used in legal synthetic drugs known as bath salts, calling the chemicals an "imminent hazard" to the public.

"This imminent action by the DEA demonstrates that there is no tolerance for those who manufacture, distribute, or sell these drugs anywhere in the country, and that those who do will be shut down, arrested, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," DEA Administrator Michele M. Leonhart said in a statement on the DEA website. "DEA has made it clear we will not hesitate to use our emergency scheduling authority to control these dangerous chemicals that pose a significant and growing threat to our nation."

In June, an ABC News "20/20" investigation found that despite being linked to multiple deaths, bath salts have been sold across the country with little to no oversight, sometimes to teens.

The DEA describes the bath salts, which have nothing in common with products long-used in bathing, as a sort of imitation cocaine or LSD – a substance that while legal, has not been approved by the FDA for human consumption and has been linked to violent, sometimes deadly outbursts by users. Varieties of bath salts are sold under different labels in corner stores across the U.S. as well as online and have prompted thousands of calls to Poison Control nationwide.

I want to know what else these chemicals are used for that's now going to become impossible/stupid expensive to get.

> No joke. A 22 yo in our town did bath salts (aka mephedrone and methylenedioxypyrovalerone, or MDPV, also known as substituted cathinones) last week, layed down on US route 1 and at 10:45 PM was promptly run over and killed.

Did he (or she) at least get their Darwin Award? Or had they already reproduced?

Looked it up.
Looks like this stuff is SOLD as “bath salts” so that dealers can make it in industrial quantities and druggies can buy it easier.

Stupid druggies. What we really need to do is lower the price.

I have been using bath salts and epsom salts for years to soothe aching muscles and sore feet.

How exactly do you get high from this?

"Bath salts" is a euphemism for them, just like "weed" is for marijuana (don't try to smoke your dandelions to get high). I think they were called "bath salts" to avoid FDA rules about it being either a food or a drug. The sellers could claim that they weren't meant to be ingested, so they can't be blamed for what the buyer did with them.

Bath salts contain manmade chemicals like mephedrone and methylenedioxypyrovalerone, or MDPV, also known as substituted cathinones. Both drugs are related to khat, an organic stimulant found in Arab and East African countries that is illegal in the United States.

They are similar to so-called synthetic marijuana, which has also caused a surge in medical emergencies and been banned in a number of states. In March, the Drug Enforcement Administration used emergency powers to temporarily ban five chemicals used in synthetic marijuana, which is sold in the same types of shops as bath salts.

Will this affect mainstream products like Calgon who might have been using chemicals like this to produce an aroma?

It is not bath salts that you bath in. They just call it that.

When mephedrone was rediscovered in 2003, it was not specifically illegal to possess in any country. As its use has increased many countries have passed legislation making the possession, sale and manufacturing of mephedrone illegal.

Which is also due to user abuse.

ANYONE who wants to get high, plastered, etc. will find a way to the point of injecting melted down Vicks inhalers, snorting anti-freeze or even sucking on whipped cream cans.

They aren't exactly picky if it makes them stoned out of their gourd.

Rolled up ONE-dollar bills? How low-class. Isn’t a $100 bill considered SOP? Or is that only for cocaine?

Let’s put it this way: It was the first time, in my adult life, that I have cried for my mother. I was literally crying for my mother while holding onto the porcelain maiden.
