Report: Las Vegas’ recovery hurt by lack of education, diversification

Las Vegas’ attempt to turn the corner on the recession has been made more difficult by a lack of educated workers coupled with reliance on industries most vulnerable to the recession.

That’s what can be drawn from a report issued by the Brookings Institution think tank in Washington. Brookings found that cities with the lowest unemployment rates tended to be those that have enough educated workers to fill available jobs along with industries that are either growing or more resistant to recession.

The report, co-authored by Brookings senior research analyst Jonathan Rothwell and think tank fellow and Research Director Alan Berube, grouped the nation’s 100 largest metro areas into four categories based on jobs and education data from December 2007 through December 2009. The Washington/Arlington/Alexandria metro area emerged on top with the healthiest mix of educated workers and industries most resilient to the recession. Other cities lower on the list either have a well-educated workforce and vulnerable industries or resilient businesses but less-educated workers.

For any think-tank that would like a vast amount of knowledge about the downturn of Vegas...in a very compact statement...it’s simple.

The town is entirely built on tourism. There is no other industry there. You can talk about food and construction...but they all relate back to tourism. So when a real depression hits...and folks don’t have money for Vegas vacations or gambling, then Vegas doesn’t survive. And if you were living there for the past four decades and think that it can survive in these times, you are wrong. If the economy doesn’t show some recovery by the end of next year...I would imagine at least twenty thousand people will pack up and give up on the city. It’s that simple.

the unions and mob made chicago into a mess in a couple hundred of years,

now the unions and mob made las vegas into a mess in 50 years.

we avoid both cities.

Another point would be the proliferation of indian casinos over the last decade have sapped some of the traffic and the casinos in the far east have done the same with the international travelers.

I also foresee Las Vegas becoming major center for senior citizens with all of the built up infrastructure and diminished gaming.

Yeah the liberals have been saying this for years. Mostly the ones saying it want to see Gambling banned, and Vegas turned into some kind of Medical tourism, eco friendly, teacher union run city.

I can tell you first hand, the casinos are packed every weekend, and the strip is busy as well when we go into town.

Vegas needs to go back to what it did well. Cheap food, cheap hotels, and gambling.

I have not figured out why yet, but the liberals in Vegas DESPISE gambling, and want to hurt it any way they can.

Excellent point. Many older hotels will convert to inexpensive housing, mostly for seniors.

Actually, part of the problem is image. The Democrats have spent a huge amount of time over the years trashing local education in order to justify their demands for more money for it and in order to suck up to the teacher's union, which will in turn pump more money into Democrat coffers, helping more and more Democrats get into and stay in office. While there are some bad schools in Las Vegas, there are some excellent public and private schools as well.

re: I have not figured out why yet, but the liberals in Vegas DESPISE gambling, and want to hurt it any way they can.

I don’t know if they despise gambling, but they see it as an unlimited source of taxes for them. They are forever demanding that the casinos pay an ever higher percentage of their profits, even to the point of putting the casinos out of business. Of course, most Democrats feel the same way about other businesses as well. Business large or small can never pay “enough” in taxes to satisfy them. Too bad if they go out of business.

It doesn’t help when the President disses the Las Vegas convention business, basically instructing business and trade groups to site their conventions elsewhere.
