I have a similar job, and have approached doors with Rotts, Dobes, etc. in the front yard. I’ve never needed a firearm to defend myself, but that box of milkbones in the front of my car has sure come in handy a few times.
As I said, laws enslave us and our founders understood that. They sought to limit govt in all areas. There are means other than law to solve this problem, why always pass a law that changes NOTHING.
As far as knee jerk reactions go, thinking that a law will solve the problem IS a knee jerk reaction, practiced often by liberals and conservatives.
Remember the Paperwork reduction act of the 80’s with Reagan. We were drowning in paperwork and bureaucracy. End result was another bureaucracy created that didn't solve a damn thing, costing us millions every year today.
Now, lets talk about a way to solve this problem without passing another law and not enslaving ourselves and the next generation.........................

Seems to me unreasonable when the man told them the dog was there.
OTOH, not only does the Det. claim the dog charged them, but the neighbor said they looked scared right after the shooting.
Perhaps the cops were indeed scared of the dog for good reason.
Of course, even so I don't see why, even if not warned, cops (or anyone) must automatically shoot a dog doing its normal thing - protecting its ground. Could they not have gotten out of the fence?
I am starting to think more "dog psychology" needs to be taught to cops in their courses. Maybe Cesar Millan can visit.
You try telling a cop to NOT do something.

Passing a law to address this problem, just gives cover and legitimacy for the next LEO that shoots a dog.
I would dare propose to you that a solution is already being implemented and no further action is required. The uproar created in that local community is being noticed by all in that community. No officer wants to noticed, and they are all talking about it. They know if they do it, they are next. There is NO COVER or MEANS to justify this action, until you give them the protocol through another law! THINK, PEOPLE, THINK!

If I had a dime for every time I said that...even when it was a possum or groundhog and I was obviously *carrying* it home against its will...LOL
Generally, because the local yokels are all good ol’ boys who grew up here where everybody and their brother has a bunch of hounds running in the yard and they’re used to that, we don’t get many [can’t think of any, actually] dog shootings.
To the east, however, is our little “big town” and the city cops, I wouldn’t trust as far as I could throw them.
The W.MD state troopers are pretty cool, too.
We were crossing Haystack Mtn up in Cumberland in an ice storm and state cop was risking his own life to save a red tail hawk who’d been stunned by a car.
We offered to help him keep the bird off the interstate but he told us it was too dangerous and that he already had a rehabber on the way.
This seems to be mostly an “urban” phenomenon although I’m sure it’s happened in the hinterlands as well.
