GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Locked-out union workers at American Crystal Sugar Co. are blaming fires at plants in Drayton and in East Grand Forks, Minn., on inexperienced replacement workers hired to take over harvesting duties.
Company spokesman Jeff Schweitzer said the fires happened in pulp dryers Thursday at the plant in Drayton and on Friday at the East Grand Forks plant. No one was hurt.
East Grand Forks Fire Chief Randy Gust said a pulp dryer fire isn't unusual and that his department responds to about one each year.
Union spokesman Mark Froemke said the company won't share information about the fires. The union has argued that only their workers have the experience to run the plants.

I’m a cynic. I think they were caused by fired/laid off union workers, but then what do I know?
This is the Union violence demanded by Jimmy Hoffa.
The MSM will never mention it.
I wonder what union it is. The article didn’t reveal that. Not that it matters that much - they’re all vicious, although some of them really go over the top.
Union members are locked out, unable to access former work areas... can’t sabotage things they can’t get to.
Sounds like more union destruction of property. This is beginning to be a pattern.
Yeah.
Riiiiiiiiight!
- The union has argued that only their workers have the experience to run the plants.
This may be true, but it may be more cost effective for the company to fix the damage caused by inexperienced workers than to keep this union.
Strikers are famous for setting little destructive booby traps for the workers who take over after they strike. I thought everyone knew that.
Would they?
Lockout has been going on for long enough for anything like that to have surfaced before now.
Sometimes you have to resign yourself to rebuilding from ashes.
“Union members are locked out, unable to access former work areas... cant sabotage things they cant get to.”
They simply sabotage things beforehand.
And you and I both know that they did.
Wanna buy a bridge?
Never let facts get in the way of a good rant.
>>>Wanna buy a bridge?
Already own one. Waana buy it?
Pioneer Sugar grown and refined right here in Michigan.
>>>And you and I both know that they did.
No, I don’t know that. What I do know is what I posted. The lockout has been going on long enough, and the equipment has been in use for long enough that if there was any tampering, it would have been evident from day one of the lock-out and not surfacing now... it’s likely that any problems now are from inexperienced people operating plants.
I live in Realville - you should visit once in a while.
mere coincidence, I’m sure/
