Skip to comments.Mitt flier: Perry 'wants to kill Social Security' (being distributed in Florida)
Posted on 09/10/2011 1:47:27 PM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife
The Tampa Tribune posts a flier that the Mitt Romney campaign is distributing in Florida, attacking Rick Perry as "reckless and wrong on social security."
The top of the flier has pictures of a smiling Romney and a surly-looking Perry, and reads: "Two candidates. Only one will protect what's important to you." Continue Reading
"Rick Perry believes social security is a 'failure,'" the flier says, quoting the Texas governor's book. "Rick Perry believes Social Security is unconstitutional ... Rick Perry does not believe Social Security should exist ... How can we trust anyone who wants to kill Social Security?"
Notably not mentioned in the flier: the term "Ponzi scheme," which Perry used to describe Social Security in his book and again in the POLITICO/NBC debate Wednesday. While some Perry critics have fixated on that language, the Romney campaign apparently believes it's not the worst of Perry's problems when it comes to the popular entitlement program.
Except for the photo of Romney, the flier is also almost exactly the kind of attack the Obama campaign could use against Perry in a general election.
Perry Campaign: Remember When Romney Compared Social Security to a Criminal Enterprise? [quote from Romney's book] " What would happen to the bankers responsible for misusing the money? They would go to jail. But what has happened to the people responsible for the looming bankruptcy of Social Security? They keep returning to Congress every two years. [end quote]
Did Perry Blow It on Social Security? (Marco Rubio and Ron Johnson certainly didn't)There is a brand of Republican who looks at President Obamas vulnerability on the economy and says, Go for it! They argue that the overriding issue of the campaign should be jobs and that everything else should be a distant second.
There is another kind of Republican who sees the election of 2012 as a tipping point for the nation a do-or-die moment when we will either pull back from the precipice of debt and national decline or fall off the edge. This second brand of Republican is hoping that a candidate will emerge who can lay before the American people the nature of the challenge we face in a direct and forthright way. If a campaign is run and won on the need to reform our obese government, the new president will have a mandate to take the necessary steps once in office.
After Wednesdays Republican debate, it seems that Mitt Romney represent
When viewed through the prism of history, it's all accurate. How does the Romney camp expect this to be a detriment....?
Grandma will take that monthly check every month until the zombie apocalypse, then blame the zombies when it doesnt arrive.
In short, the Dems (and every opponent of Perry) will make this ALL ABOUT GRRRRRANDMA.
Romney: Social Security is a criminal enterprise.....
Perry: Social Security is a ponzi scheme
sounds like one in the same to me.......
This is why I have a problem with “Mitt”....seems slimy...and I’m 60....everything Perry says is true....
Note how Perry's team went after Paul (his letter about Reagan and leaving the GOP) and then Romney (quotes from his own book on SS)
There is low and then there is Rino low.
Remember, Karl Rove, his group and their money are behind Mitt Romney.
Wow....this is scumbag style stuff beyond belief.
Rove sucks, too!
Pitiful. Florida is definitely not a state where we need our candidates to drive each others negatives up. Romney’s conduct could have implications for the general election spreading this kind of nonsense which is right out of the Dem playbook.
So, Perry didn’t say these things?
Romney reminds me of Rosa Delauro holding up pictures for the cameras while on the the House floor -- crying over canned dog food for the elderly.
Hahahaha! Milt is using Democrat tactics against a former Democrat. Doing Mr. Obama’s work for him. Lovely! BTW, has anyone here ever met a real, live Romney supporter or seen a bumper sticker or yard sign? Gov. Palin isn’t even declared yet and I see both bumper stickers and signs ALL THE TIME!!
If the MITT don’t FIT, he has to SPLIT.
Romney is going for the women and black vote in Florida.
But Marco Rubio rose steadily in the polls and buried Crist in the Senate race — using SS as his platform.
The Florida electorate is already aware of this.
With “sweet” talking Marco Rubio campaigning in Florida for nominee Perry, Obama won’t have a chance with this wedge issue.
Mitt’s only chance now is to stop Perry in Florida.
Even the recent straw poll at the Maryland state fair belonged to Gov. Perry.
Mitt is tanking.
One thing I don’t think the Romney folks or Dems are even thinking about is that TODAY’s granny is not your or my granny. She is more independent, she’s likely had a full career, she’s far more educated, she didn’t live thru the Great Depression, she follows politics from her own perspective instead of following gramps. She knows SS has to be fixed. Not fiddled around the edges but FIXED. SS is no longer the 3rd rail of politics.
In Perry’s own words.
Having said that, unless Perry does a better job articulating what he means and how he will fix it, it will bury him.
There is only one demonstrably honest and un-hypocritical man in this race so far, Ron Paul.
And I believe that President Palin will make him either her Sec of State or of the Treasury.
I also worked for Goldwater and Reagan, I really am that old.
Miracles can happen and save and preserve US.
At least until the next election.
Of course, he said those things. And, he is right about them.
Scaring grandma is gutter politics reserved for DUmmy scums, I thought until Romney decided to exploit this tactic for political gain.
Perry should put out his vision and plan to reform (re-structure) Social Security for generations to come. That will be the only right thing to do.
As for Romney’s gutter politics on this issue, shame on him.
Exactly, and it is only getting started. IMO, what Romney is going to do is nothing compared to what BO and company are going to do.

AMEN! I’m a gun toting, rabble rousing, independent, supporter of the Constitution and states’ rights, not your daddy’s Oldsmobile grandma! Romney violated Reagan’s rule...don’t speak ill of another Republican candidate and he is doing to Perry what he did to Palin in the 2008 race....he needs to be slammed dunk....OUT of the so called top tier....he is a pond scum politician....and that is the nicest thing to say about him!
That’s mild! If rick wins the nomination will been seeing it on TV and hearing on radio 24-7!
There will be 8 billion ads from AARP!
Just what we need - Republicans lying about each other and resorting to dirty campaigning to give Obama fuel for next year.
One more reason to add to my list of “Why not to vote for Mini-AnointedIdiot-Romney.” =.=
Romney’s desperate. He’s watching Perry walk away with the nomination and can’t see any path to victory for himself. When Bachmann/Cain drop out the majority of their supporters will find themselves in Perry’s camp - as their second choice sure, but there none the less. All Romney has to look forward to is picking up Huntloser’s 1% constituency. I expect that the nastiness coming out of his campaign will only increase in the months to come.
IF you'd rather NOT be pinged FReepmail me.
IF you'd like to be added FReepmail me. Thanks.
The difference being, Obama's numbers and street cred are in the gutter and Rick Perry's are climbing. Who will the electorate trust --- the lying sob in the WH or the man from Texas who wants lying sobs like the man in the WH off their backs so they can work?
Perry's showing he stands with the people and Romney's showing he stands with Obama.
Nice how (besides Perry’s book Fed Up!”) the “flier” lists “Huffington Post” and “MSNBC Morning Joe” as references for the Mitt Romney flier material.
On the money.
While I detest what Romney is doing, as I said above, he is actually doing us a favor. If the American people still aren't ready for a grown up discussion about this, it is better to find out now in the primary.
On the other hand, if they are and they go ahead and nominate Perry in spite of the Elder Scare campaign, it will make it that much tougher for Obambi to pull it off in the general.
It surprises you that someone like Romney would be a Huffpo reader?
And then Obama and Biden and Hoffa will begin their battle against Perry and America.
If you can’t trust Romney to tell the truth in a campaign pamphlet, how can you trust him to be president?
I fully expect Romney’s next ad to accuse Perry of wanting to kill puppies.
If you can’t trust Romney to tell the truth in a campaign pamphlet, how can you trust him to be president?
Romney is McCain w/o the charm or electability.
Pray for America
You mean honest, as in the guy who talked about how much he backed Reagan until the letter came out that he wrote about leaving the Republican party because of Reagan? That doesn’t sound particularly honest or not hypocritical to me.
"But the details of the event are more than unseemly - they may, in fact, be illegal. Massachusetts's animal cruelty laws specifically prohibit anyone from carrying an animal "in or upon a vehicle, or otherwise, in an unnecessarily cruel or inhuman manner or in a way and manner which might endanger the animal carried thereon. "An officer for the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals responded to a description of the situation saying "it's definitely something I'd want to check out." The officer, Nadia Branca, declined to give a definitive opinion on whether Romney broke the law but did note that it's against state law to have a dog in an open bed of a pick-up truck, and "if the dog was being carried in a way that endangers it, that would be illegal."
"Dog on Roof? What Was It Like for Romney's Pooch? - Scientists Say Dog Likely Experienced Wind-Whipped, Uncomfortable Trip - "Before beginning the drive, Mitt Romney put Seamus, the family's hulking Irish setter, in a dog carrier and attached it to the station wagon's roof rack. e'd built a windshield for the carrier, to make the ride more comfortable for the dog,".. Jordan Kaplan, the owner of Petaholics, a dog walking service in New York City,
and a lifelong dog owner and dog lover, said Romney's actions were uncalled for"
"Romney's dog - This is a distinction Mitt Romney probably could do without, but he is surely the first presidential candidate to be attacked for putting a dog with diarrhea in a carrier and tying it to the top of a station wagon. Romney's defense: Seamus liked it. [like the citizens under Romney's RomneyCARE, etc.?] "
"As the oldest son, Tagg Romney commandeered the way-back of the wagon, keeping his eyes fixed out the rear window, where he glimpsed the first sign of trouble. ''Dad!'' he yelled. ''Gross!'' A brown liquid was dripping down the back window, payback from an Irish setter who'd been riding on the roof in the wind for hours. As the rest of the boys joined in the howls of disgust, Romney coolly pulled off the highway and into a service station. There, he borrowed a hose, washed down Seamus and the car, then hopped back onto the highway."
Romney's bad behavior Exposed by Seamus
"Romney Loses Nomination Over Dog Abuse? - Romney was traveling that summer with his wife, five sons, and Seamus to his parent's cottage on Lake Huron. But hours into the ride, Seamus apparently suffered diarrhea, which ran down the back window of the car. .David Kravitz wrote on BlueMassGroup, a liberal blog. "It also strikes me as classic Romney: it solves a problem efficiently, in a business-like manner, and with no regard whatsoever for the suffering that the solution may cause."
That focus group appreciated that Perry spoke the truth. Romney's ad may be beneficial in a general election but he's going to pay for this one. Get the popcorn.
