Pro-Life Republican Could Pull Off Upset in New York Race

by Andrew Bair | LifeNews.com | 9/9/11 11:39 AM

Republicans are poised to pull off a major upset in Tuesday’s special election in New York to fill the vacant seat left by disgraced pro-abortion Rep. Anthony Weiner (D). According to a Siena Research Poll released Friday, pro-life Republican Bob Turner holds a 6-point lead over pro-abortion Democrat David Weprin. Turner has even won the endorsements of prominent New York City Democrats including former mayor Ed Koch and Assemblyman Dov Hikind.

With Weprin’s campaign in jeopardy in a reliably blue district, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) has begun to panic. Straight from the Democratic playbook, The DCCC released a TV ad attacking Turner on Social Security and Medicare. However, the ad showed a plane flying over the Manhattan skyline, airing just days before the tenth anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks. After universal outrage, the DCCC was forced to pull the ad and re-edit the scene, removing the skyline.

This has not been the first major embarrassment for the Weprin campaign. Weprin dodged a recent debate conveniently citing concerns over Hurricane Irene. However, at the time, the storm had already passed. In an even weirder turn of events, the Weprin campaign hired a Queens magician named Wendy Wizard to publicly endorse Bob Turner outside a fundraising event. The campaign even issued a press release touting quotes from the magician.

Weprin has had a difficult time balancing his support for President Obama and the low approval ratings for the President even in the liberal Queens district. With a major component of the election a referendum on the direction of the country under President Obama, Weprin has been cautious in voicing support for Obama’s reelection, saying “I will probably not refuse to endorse him because I think I will be more effective by supporting him but at the same time, being very strongly against him on some of his policies.”

Weprin has vowed to make shoring up federal funding for Planned Parenthood a top priority if elected to Congress. Weprin joined State Assembly and Senate colleagues in sending a letter to Speaker Boehner opposing any cuts to Planned Parenthood’s funding.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn (D) in endorsing Weprin emphasized, “There are two candidates in this race: one who wants to scale back a women’s right to choose at a time when women did not have full access to reproductive choices in this county. Then there’s another candidate, David Weprin, who always stood firm 100 percent, behind a woman’s right to choose.”

NARAL Pro-Choice New York also issued a glowing endorsement of Weprin. The group noted Weprin’s past support for a bill to restrict the free speech of pro-life protesters and sidewalk counselors. Weprin, a member of the Pro-Choice Legislative Caucus, also impressed NARAL with his support for the Reproductive Health Act, which would guarantee legalized abortion-on-demand in New York if Roe vs. Wade were to be overturned.

Unlike Weprin, Bob Turner is pro-life and supports repeal of the pro-abortion Obama healthcare law. A Turner victory on Tuesday will surely send shockwaves through Washington. Just as Scott Brown’s underdog victory in last January’s Massachusetts Senate race built momentum for Republicans heading into November’s successful midterm elections, a Turner victory could begin a domino effect against Democrats nationwide heading into 2012.

We seem to hear these stories all the time. In the end the liberals win the election in the end either through fraud or they are just too damn stupid to actually make the right decision for a change.

Sorry to be negative about it like that but I really doubt a liberal district would vote for republican.

Make no mistake, this election is all about Israel.

Ed Koch has learned his lesson and is fighting back against Obama continuously throwing Israel under the bus.

Very symbolic though, especially since this district will likely be gone after re-districting.

Should be a telling message to the dems...

I-WILL-BELIEVE-IT-WHEN-I-SEE-IT...

Six point Republican lead + Democrat Fraud = 50/50 chance.

I will hope for a miracle, but the State of my birth is as bad as my current State (CA) of residence.

Very true, NY-9 is about Israel, it is a referendum on Obams. There are other factors at play.
One factor is that Weprin voted for same sex marriage in NY, not a popular position in this district. Another is that Weprin doesn’t even live in the district.
Weprin has run a terrible campaign.
This looks like a GOP blowout in the making. When the candidate looks at the polls that have him losing by 6 to the GOP, and says “the only poll that counts is the one on election day” you know he is done.
This will be a major psychological victory for the GOP and a signal to disaffected Dems that if they stick with Obama, they’re going to lose.
A lot of the credit goes to Mayor Koch for having the courage to go public, call out Obama, and lead the way.
In phone calling to registered Dems today, 50% who picked up said they were voting fir Turner.

And yet a bunch of "states rights" freepers are always insisting RAT state politicians NEVER use their authority to fight the federal government, that's only a GOP thing. ("The big difference between Obama and Perry is that Perry believes in standing up for states and not kowtowing to federal authorities, blah blah blah") I wonder all those freepers were during the 8 years Bush was President and RAT state legislators tried to bully him and the feds on everything from the Iraq war (why city councils should have any say in military decisions is beyond me) to gun laws (local RAT officials: 2nd amendment says we can't ban these guns? We don't need no stinkin' second amendment!)I haven't met a RAT state official yet who believes that states should meekly obey whatever the federal government wants, especially when the federal government is in the hands of Republicans.

I hope Boehner gave the NY RAT state legislatures a big middle finger when they huffed and puffed about their precious Planned Parenthood funds. Looking at this guy's awful spend-and-regulate everything record on the state level, let's hope Weprin never gets near a federal office.

This is my district. It’s not so liberal.
54% disapprove of Obama according to a recent poll. It just votes for Democrats because GOP never even bothered TRYING before Turner came along. Really. It was like voting in Saddam era Iraq. So of course if the dem was the only one on the ballot except for some other fringe parties, the dem will win by 97% of the vote.

He can’t even vote for himself! Fail.

It’s a democrat district but hardly a bastion. 44% or so for Bush/McCain in the last 2 elections. And it’s blue collar.

I’d say we have a 50/50 shot

yes. All the rabbis are telling everyone to vote for Turner. Weprin really blew it with the gay marriage vote. I mean here’s a guy with a kipa and a member of 2 Modern orthodox synagogues (I’ve been to one of them because my sister goes there) and all the Jews will vote for the Catholic. It is really something else.

The other thing is that there are a lot of Russian Jews and they are more secular but they really really hate Obama and socialism. Isn’t that why they left the USSR in the first place?
