Rep. Bob Turner (R-N.Y.) was one of the many whose homes burned down in widespread fires that devastated the Breezy Point community in Queens last night in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. Officials estimated that anywhere from 80 to 100 houses were destroyed, according to The Associated Press. Turner issued a statement on his Facebook page, saying that he was safe despite the fire and urging support for those who weren't as fortunate. Here's the full statement: ***** "My thoughts and prayers are with all of my fellow New Yorkers and the many others who are experiencing loss as a...

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Attorney Wendy Long rolled to victory in the state Republican U.S. Senate primary last night, and will face U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) in the Nov. 6 general election. But Rep. Bob Turner looked to be the winner on Staten Island. With 96 percent of the statewide vote counted, according to The Associated Press, Ms. Long had 69,168 votes, good for 51 percent. Turner had 48,429 votes, or 36 percent, while Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos had 18,307 votes,...

One surprise win deserves another. After shocking many with a win in the 9th Congressional District last year, U.S. Rep. Bob Turner (R-Middle Village) was defeated by the conservative party candidate, Manhattan lawyer Wendy Long in a three-way Republican primary Tuesday. Long will now square off against U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), a three-year incumbent, in this fall’s race for the Senate. “On the 6th of November, we will change the face of New York politics,” Long said at her Manhattan victory party. “The people of New York saw that I would create the sharpest contrast with Kirsten Gillibrand.” The...

Did any of you listen to the debate last Sunday, and forum by NewYorkFamilies.org on Thursday, featuring the three NY U.S. senatorial candidates? After listening I will definitely vote for Wendy Long at the primaries this Tuesday. Wendy Long is 100% pro-life, belonged to Americans United for life, pro-Constitution, worked for Justice Clarence Thomas, and much more. While all of the candidates are conservative, Maragos (sadly) has the exceptions on abortion, and according to the NY Post is tight with the NY GOP, which is too "moderate" imo. Turner is a very fine man, but is too open to the...

Calls on Gillibrand to support rights for all New Yorkers New York, New York – U.S. Senate candidate Wendy Long stands with Cardinal Dolan, Harvard Law Professor Mary Ann Glendon, the University of Notre Dame, and all people of conscience to oppose the Obama administration’s attack on religious liberty, calling on Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand to support the rights of all New Yorkers, not just some. While Sen. Gillibrand is relentless in her efforts to extend benefits to certain select groups, she has turned her back on the fundamental freedom of faith and conscience that is protected by the United States...

The Left has accused Republicans of a “war on women,†but New York Democratic senator Kirsten Gillibrand could wind up running against a woman in the fall. The contest for who will face Democrat Gillibrand is on, and Wendy Long discusses what a Senator Long would look like with Kathryn Jean Lopez. KATHRYN JEAN LOPEZ: What do you have against Senator Gillibrand?WENDY LONG: National Journal recently came out with its annual congressional rankings — the gold standard in political measuring sticks. Kirsten Gillibrand was tied for No. 1 Most Liberal Member of the United States Senate. She’s metamorphosed from...

"Former Mayor Ed Koch is back on President Obama’s side and will be by his side during a fancy White House bash Wednesday with British Prime Minister David Cameron. Koch said he scored an invite to the swanky soiree in honor of Cameron and his wife, Samantha. Koch, a Democrat, raised eyebrows and ire last year when he backed Republican Bob Turner over Democrat David Weprin in the special election to replace disgraced ex-Rep. Anthony Weiner in a Queens-Brooklyn district. Koch said the cross-party endorsement was to send a message to Obama to be a better friend to Israel —...

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) told a gathering of anti-war activists in Los Angeles on March 12 that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was misleading the public about Israel’s willingness to confront Iran alone, and that he had privately assured President Barack Obama that Israel would not go to war without U.S. backing. The week before, Netanyahu had used a visit to Washington to convey the message that Israel was prepared to act alone if necessary. That message was necessary, given the Obama administration's record of wavering on Iran, and its public attempts to dissuade Israel

Not long after winning a big upset in September in a special election for Congress, Bob Turner flew hundreds of miles away from his New York City district to a federal prison in North Carolina. There, Mr. Turner walked past the guards, through the metal detectors and gates and into a visiting room, where he met Prisoner No. 09185-016 — also known as Jonathan Pollard. To many Americans, Mr. Pollard is a dreadful character, having pleaded guilty in 1986 to spying on behalf of the Israeli government. But back in Mr. Turner’s heavily Jewish district, his life sentence has become...

Democrats poured $1.5 million into their failed attempt to retain the Congressional seat last held by Anthony D. Weiner, vastly outspending the Republican candidate, Bob Turner, who ultimately prevailed in New York’s Ninth District. The Democratic candidate, Assemblyman David I. Weprin, spent $859,000 on the race, according to a campaign finance filing on Thursday. National groups chipped in more than $675,000, mostly to pay for television advertising in an effort to salvage Mr. Weprin’s flagging campaign in the final days before the Sept. 13 special election. That amounted to more than double the spending by Mr. Turner, a retired cable...

Meet New York’s newest hero. Kevin Hiltunen, a former NYPD officer, yesterday grabbed an Occupy Wall Street demonstrator by the collar and dragged him out of a Queens school where he’d been heckling US Rep. Bob Turner at the congressman’s swearing-in ceremony. “I guess you could say I sorted him out,” said Hiltunen, 48, his jacket and tie barely mussed after dragging the scruffy protester out on his rear end. “All I was doing was trying to stop this historic occasion from being disrupt-ed. There is a time and place to exercise your First Amendment rights,’’ said Hiltunen, of Bergen...

Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch recently endorsed Republican Bob Turner in the special election for Anthony Weiner's old congressional seat, helping him pull off the upset against Democrat Dave Weprin. Koch, who supported Obama in 2008, wanted to punish the Democratic party over "President Obama's open hostility to the State of Israel." But that was all a few weeks ago! He's now changed his mind and endorsed Obama, after being invited to a fancy party. Koch released a statement today that, for the most part, is a party report with several off-topic detours along the way: I attended...

Democrat David Weprin said yesterday that President Obama’s sagging popularity among Queens and Brooklyn voters cost him the election for ex-Rep. Anthony Weiner’s congressional seat. In a stunning upset, Weprin was trounced by Republican Bob Turner, whose campaign had tied him to the president. “The message of the campaign was ‘Send Obama a message,’ ” said Weprin, a Queens state assemblyman. “I think the problem was that he’s the president and people are frustrated, and it’s just natural to take it out on the top guy -- or the top guy’s party. “As much as I tried to make it...

Scrub out the stench of Weiner! Newly sworn-in Republican Rep. Bob Turner’s family ordered a thorough cleaning of the House office space he inherited from his disgraced predecessor, Anthony Weiner, after finding an old “Anthony’’ toothbrush in the bathroom. The discovery of Weiner toiletries grossed out the newcomers, who requested that the congressman’s bathroom in Office 2104 of the Rayburn building be sanitized, sources said. Weiner resigned in June amid a sexting scandal in which he tweeted crotch shots and naked photos to young women, including from an office chair.

On his first day of work, Bob Turner didn't let his Republican boss get a word in edgewise. The retired TV exec made a rookie's mistake by not waiting for Speaker John Boehner to recognize him before thanking the crowd after being sworn in on the floor of the House of Representatives. "The only hiccup - cutting the speaker of the House off," Turner, 70, said of his first day representing New York's 9th Congressional District. Turner buckled the knees of President Obama and national Democrats by upsetting David Weprin Tuesday in the race to replace disgraced ex-Rep. Anthony Weiner...

Well, not in so many words. But he might as well have, that's what he meant. Upset by the stunning loss of his Dem boy in NY-9 to Republican Bob Turner, here's what that sleazeball Waxman (D-Lala Land) had to say about his fellow Jews [h/t Red State]: There are Jews who are trending toward the Republican Party, some of it because of their misunderstanding of Obama’s policies in the Middle East, and some of it, quite frankly, for economic reasons. They feel they want to protect their wealth, which is why a lot of well-off voters vote for Republicans.” Get...

Bob Turner overcame a 3:1 disadvantage in voter registration in the NY 9th Congressional District. On Debbie Wasserman-Schultz: NY-9 is “a very difficult district for Democrats” rmlew wrote: Is Wasserman-Schmuck conceding every even to D+5 district in the country as “difficult”? Does she mean that every district won by less than 21% is difficult? Please, Lord make it so. We’ll have 350 Republicans in the House in 2013. I think she recognizes that there are many "nominal" democrats, i.e. they are registered democrats, but they vote otherwise in general elections. On Bob Turner deserves to be elected by 9th District to replace...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 14, 2011 Mary Beth Hutchins or Elizabeth Ray at 703-683-5004 WEPRIN VOTE FOR GAY MARRIAGE COST HIM SEAT IN CONGRESS Washington –The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) today released a “flash” survey conducted yesterday among voters of New York’s 9th Congressional District which demonstrates that David Weprin’s support of same-sex marriage was a major factor in his loss to Republican Bob Turner. “This survey demonstrates what many people have been saying for a long time – David Weprin’s vote in favor of same-sex marriage cost him election to the US House,” said Brian Brown, president of...

A reader passes this along. It looks very similar to one that Jane Corwin filed in a recent Upstate Congressional special election. Update: So I got off the phone with the lawyer who filed this case, and they’re impounding the non-regular ballots (i.e. absentee & provisional) because of “gross incompetence” on behalf of the Board of Elections, citing “absentee ballots being mailed to dead people and people who did not request them.”

Some Democrats are arguing that the NY-9 race doesn’t mean anything for Obama’s 2012 chances. But according to David Weprin, the Democratic candidate who lost the NY-9 race to Republican Bob Turner, Obama has “major problems” in New York. Weprin blamed Obama’s unpopularity and Israel issues for his failed bid during an interview with Washington Jewish Week’s Adam Kredo: My first question for Weprin was, “What happened?” His reply: “The media, my opponent somewhat successfully made it a referendum on Obama. I don’t know if it was just Israel, but Israel certainly was a major part of it.” Whether real...
