Retired Portland police and firefighters sue city to keep pension overpayments

More than 500 retired Portland police and firefighters and their spouses have brought a class action lawsuit against the city, arguing that Portland's public safety retirement fund breached their contract by trying to recoup nearly $3 million the fund mistakenly overpaid them in pension benefits.
The lawsuit, filed initially by five plaintiffs in Multnomah County Circuit Court, seeks to stop the Portland Fire and Police Disability and Retirement Fund from withholding pension payments that the fund's board says its members owe the city for miscalculations that occurred for over a decade.
The suit asks the court to award damages of $25,000 per retiree, as well as attorney fees.

You’d love it here in Oregon....lots of libs to loathe, haha. On a serious note, only in Oregon would this happen, I find Eugene bad, doesn’t compare to how left Portland is.

On another note, I don’t think I’ve ever met a single conservative from Portland, I am hard pressed to find one friend among my circle that is right leaning. I don’t think there is one. Eugene sucks.
America being what it is today, I wouldn’t be very suprised if this case did.

I really doubt that. Pension calculations are so complex most of the time it is hard to imagine them getting them correct half of the time. I also wonder how they managed to figure out that the calculations in these cases were incorrect.
On a side note most of the time the pension calculation formulas are not available to the rank and file except in a very simplified form.
“as well as attorney’s fees” - it’s always the poor lawyers who get hurt in these matters.
I don’t think that the realities of our day are going to permit that.
Most of our states and local governments are in the same fix as was the former Soviet States after the fall of the USSR; Huge liabilities to pensioners and no money to pay them.
The other similarity to the former Soviet States that is still to come is rampant inflation. When that hits the state pensioners are really screwed. They will have to deal with a bankrupt state pension fund and double digit inflation (or higher thanks to the leadership of Obama and the Dimocrats) destroying their saving.

My employer Standard Practice Guide(s) and also on our paycheck stubs say if there is a mistake made in overpayment of any kind, it will be recouped from paycheck, pension, etc. So these folks know they were over-paid, kept the money, then sue to keep the over-payment of funds they were not entitled to?
Taxpayers in Portland should sue them back for “receiving funds not entitled”....
