Palin Defends Perry on Social Security

Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry has taken a lot of heat for his critical comments toward Social Security. Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin says that Social Security shouldn’t just be jettisoned but that the Texas governor is right to call for reform.

"Well there's no need to frighten or throw under the bus our esteemed elders who have paid all of their working lives into the Social Security system. And the question should be asked of the politicians, where the heck is their money?" Palin said on Fox News.

"What Rick Perry was trying to say I believe is that there needs to be reform. Status quo is not acceptable because these programs are insolvent . . . So he's saying reform is necessary, and we either reform these entitlement programs ourselves or the world capital markets will reform them for us."

Perry’s main competition for the presidential nomination, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, cuts him no such slack. His campaign is passing out a flier in Florida ripping Perry as "reckless and wrong on Social Security."

Perry needs to come out with a Social Security Fix Proposal that alleviates fears of current recipients and probably anyone over 50. A good start would be increase age of eligibility, a “means” test and eliminate the Cap on earnings for social security contributions.

Social Security is a fraud and a scam. It was originally conceived as a welfare entitlement do enslave all future voters as DEMONrats. The amount you receive back after paying in hundreds of thousands if not millions in FICA is a pittance that wouldn’t feed a mouse and his family for a day. Best to stop it flat right now.

A lot of spin there, she could just as well have been saying, why do you support spending social security money on illegals, mr Perry.

I would hardly think that “schooling” Perry is the same as “defending” him.

Who comes up with these headlines?

She said exactly that during her speech in Iowa AND in NH before the debate. I think most, if not all the flak being directed at perry for what he said about SS is pure political pandering to a whole constituency that has learned better in the past few years. Most people in the over 50 age brackets didn’t get that old being stupid.

I know you wrote that without thinking. I can’t be stopped ‘flat.’ There has to be a plan. Paul Ryan had a good one.

Perry/Palin 2012

I hope Perry doubles-down on his Socialist Security is a Ponzi scheme declaration.

He should start by asking how many of his fellow candidates are currently participating in Socialist Security.

He may not be participating himself. I don't know. But it will at least give him the high ground of honesty on the subject.

And a darn fine question it is. What about that there Social Security Lock Box? Social Security is soon to be broke because, golly gee Wally, the system really is a ponzi scheme. But if politicians had not been raiding the money for decades, it would have lasted a lot longer.

Politically I see it as Palin being a tea party spokesperson and this statement shows her class and humility as well as her openess to be Perry’s VP.

To call this ‘schooling’ from Palin to Perry is ridiculous. If Palin were asked point blank if she thinks she is ‘schooling’ Perry she would say indeed not Rick and I are friends and share the same tea party politics.

Just a matter of time before Palin endorses Perry, then it’s all over for Romney and we can concentrate on the general.

Other than a horrible immigration report card, Perry is not a very good speaker. I am judging from the debate.

I will admit I haven’t heard him speak a great deal.

GWB was far more eloquent. At least GWB seemed to know what he was going to say and then deliver it. He got that word xenophobe out of his mouth in record time. LOL

Perry is a good man, but he's not presidential material.

Palin, meanwhile is a good woman ... and Presidential material.

Trust me ... Read her books.

The headline on Drudge says this am that Perry is sticking to his guns.

For those of us who have followed Perry for a long time, this is playing out predictably and well: Perry is digging his heels in and in this, he is not going to be swayed. This is EXACTLY what he did on tort reform way back in 2003, when Texas was the lawsuit capital of the world. (A lot of freepers don’t fully appreciate the importance of that issue...and Perry, along with others, but Perry was important, made it sort of a non-issue and this was after decades of domination of Texas by liberal plaintiff’s lawyers).

Yes, before all the border crowd chimes in here, we understand that Perry is not good on the border. Understood.

But the fiscal health of the country needs some serious attention, and SS reform is a piece of that. And Perry is now showing that he has some backbone and he is not going to back down from this fight. What will his reform plan look like? Hard to say...but he is openly identifying the problem, and he’s not going to back down from that and that is a good thing.

How much does it cost tax payers to ‘run’ the social security administration? I have tried to locate the number but cannot find it.

I am not convinced anyone has a handle on how to ‘reform’ this agency because it is ‘too’ big to fail. I cannot find the number of employees that are currently working for the SS administration, but there are 10 regional offices plus many field offices.

I do not oppose reforming the system, but it is the ‘system’ bottom up, that needs the overhauling. And soundbites from politicians are not going to get US anywhere. Unless or until elected politicians are outlawed from dipping into the money pot the system will never get fixed.

Sarah gave a great interview on this...her statement about throwing seniors under the bus was directed at Obama...which folks have alluded to differently...saying she said it to Perry...which was one big fat lie...she spoke of the debt ceiling and how Obama told them 'we pay not have the money to pay SS.'
