I have been ringing for about 42 years. First thing my kids say when we see each other is WHAT.

Tinnitus, the problem that doesn’t exist until you think about it. Thanks a lot!

tinitus(a ringing in the ears) is one thing, but rin-tin-tinitus(a barking in the ears) is still another! (credit to The Farside, I think)

Not to make light of the suffering that can be caused....I have a touch myself, caused by migraines.....

Not sure that it is proven that it is always a “phantom” sound. I believe I read that there have been some cases where a microphone placed near the ear could actually pick the sound up!

Who knows? Some kind of weird feedback, maybe?

Anyways, good news for people. I have a bit of it but not enough to really bother me.

Yeah, now I won’t be able to go to sleep tonight without the crickets. Thanks Van Halen for all the good times in my Camaro. Since then, I have been paying The Man his due.

I was thinking the same thing. I can largely tune it out unless I think about it.

I have had it for years now. I has become worse in the last year or so. It is quite maddening, especially at night when trying to sleep.

Sometimes the sound is so loud you would think everybody in the room has to be hearing it too. It does diminish at times, almost to the point of not being able to remember just what the nature of the sound was (chirping like crickets, or a high steady note, or something in between), but it does not stay away for long.

Of course, the fact is I am 73, and developed “farmer’s ear” mostly in the left ear, a result of looking back over the right shoulder to watch progress of the implement attached to or being towed by the farm tractor. The left ear is totally exposed to the rather high-decibel exhaust note from the tractor (especially bad on high-horsepower Diesels with turbochargers), the right ear is not nearly as exposed.

Still, the residual ringing is not nearly so loud as that 4020 John Deere. Or even a Farmall Super M.

Mine is so loud, I really believe that people standing next to me surely must hear it.

I (don’t think) haven’t really suffered any hearing loss from it BUT I tend to mumble where, actually, I feel that I am talking so loud that I think I am yelling.

I have been ‘suffering’ nigh on to 50 years and I am just getting to ‘lazy’ to white it out...

I have it too, and I sleep with a fan on, or fishtank etc. It seems to drown out the ringing, and lets me sleep. And yes I am thinking about it now, and it is LOUD.

I have the radio on low to drown it out at night. And it’s true, when you think about it, it gets really loud. Perfect.

I have “farmer’s ear” as well. We had several tractors that did not have mufflers, just straight exhaust pipes.

“the brain is plastic”

Mine certainly is! This is good news, but I’m probably to old to benefit by any discoveries, as the FDA will take forever to approve anything new.
My tinnitus is quite a bit louder than people speak, it never stops, or lessens. And it frequently changes. Several different sounds. A constant very high-pitched whine somewhat towards the right side. Sometimes a whooshing sound, like a steady wind through the trees. Sometimes clicking, like someone a few doors away, pounding in tent stakes. Never stops,,,,,,,,,,,,

I think you can get GABA at a health food store. You might need the enteric kind.

Could be it won’t do anything, but hey, if it costs five bucks and it cures a lifelong problem, seems to me that’d be worth it!
