CDC Takes Closer Look at Gardasil and Paralysis (Bachmann is right

Phil Tetlock and Barbara Mellers were in a race against time to save their 15-year-old daughter, Jenny. As I reported last summer, Jenny developed a degenerative muscle disease nearly two years ago, soon after being vaccinated against the cervical-cancer-causing HPV. She became nearly completely paralyzed, though her mind was perfectly intact and she could still enjoy her pet parakeet, Hannah Montana, and Twilight.

I've been E-mailing Phil regularly over the past year, and up until our last E-mail, one week ago, he had been holding out hope that they would be able to find a cure for his daughter—or to at least determine if the human papillomavirus vaccine called Gardasil had caused his daughter's illness, most likely a juvenile form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (aka Lou Gehrig's disease). Sadly, the clock ran out last Sunday, and Jenny passed away.

Whether kids get this vaccine should be solely up to parents. Government needs to butt out.

That isn't what the poster is doing here. He is pushing an anti Gardasil line using some story about a girl and then links to his own activism site in the vaccine. If you read the end of my post I said Perry's mandate was BS. No way around it. The issue of the post is to slam the vaccine on scant evidence.

Except that children don't get HPV sitting next to someone in class.

What about the hepatitis vaccines that kids are forced to get to attend public schools. Is that one dangerous as well?

I chose not to get this vaccine for my daughter. When it first came out and everyone was beating the drum I thought that because it was so new I would not use my daughter as a guinie pig. Since it hadn’t been tried and true how did we know that we weren’t sterilizing an entire generation? stranger things have happened.

Gardasil is not proven. I posted a thread some time ago with links. The FDA approved it for 9 year olds before the trials had even begun in Japan. They have no idea how long the vaccine lasts nor what side affects, if any, happen over time or after puberty.

Again, children do not get HPV by sitting in class.

Let us move onto the Tx DREAM act.
That’s going to be more of an issue than this and Perry stated that it was a 10th amendment issue.
We have a 38% hispanic population in Tx and and a 1500 mile border that the FEDS wont enforce.
Perry and all but 4 votes in the house and senate decided that there would be less burden on Tx tax payers if we had these kids on the path to citizenship and being productive workers, rather than being on the dole.

You may not like that but it doesn’t cost you a penny as a no Texas resident, and the entire matter was proposed as a way to mitigate costs to Texas taxpayers.

I understand that it “appears” to reward illegal behavior.
Some would argue that it promotes good behavior.

How is a local school systems “request” a mandate by Perry?

I actually posted a pro-vaccine comment earlier today, although I said I didn’t really think THIS vaccine falls into the category of protecting the PUBLIC health.

However, it is true that with some of these newer vaccines the side-effects, or suspected side-effects can indeed be worse than the disease.

Assume for a moment that these girls’ conditions were triggered by the vaccine. First of all they may never have contracted HPV at all. Secondly it may not have developed to cervical cancer. Thirdly, there is treatment for cervical cancer, there’s none for ALS.

There is an ad that I’ve seen on TV, I think it is for a vaccine for meningitis. It states on the ad that Guillain-Barre syndrome is a potential side effect. That is the total paralysis sometimes called “locked-in” syndrome. I think I’d rather take my chances with meningitis.

I know a fellow whose father-in-law died of this. They actually think he got it from getting the H1N1 flu shot.

There is NO reason to make the gardisil vaccine mandatory. NONE.

Why not make it opt-in instead? I just think this whole thing is an overreach of government. I'm sure many evangelical Christians will agree with me that a vaccine for their 12 year old for a disease that is transmitted sexually is a no go!

This Catholic agrees, too. BTW, how dare you criticize government overreach on a site entitled Free Republic! Thanks for all the information you posted.

I never mentioned Perry. If you’re looking for a fight, you’ll have to look elsewhere. My beef is purely with Gardasil.

Opt out was done because opt in changed the cost of the vaccine.

I'm sorry, but this poor family is simply wrong. The cause of ALS, in all its forms, was discovered just last month. It turns out to be metabolic, a failure of protein recycling. It has nothing to do with the immune system or anything else a vaccine could affect. Their "Post hoc ergo propter hoc" fallacy is dangerous because it discourages people from getting a good vaccine and leaves them vulnerable for the real risk, the carcinogenic strains of the HPV virus and their less common life threatening sequelae cervical cancer. 12,710 cases and 4290 deaths from cervical cancer are what the American Cancer Society estimates will occur in 2011. It also infects men and does cause some cancer and deaths amongst them. Even in the worst delusions of the anti-vaccine zealots annual deaths from complications of the vaccine will be far less than that.

Now that researchers have found the real cause of ALS we can ignore all the wrong guesses put forth by desperate families over the years and concentrate on fixing the real problem. My only fear is that liberals will metaphorically extend this real cellular recycling problem into calls for more typical 'green' nonsense.

I Guardasil has become the issue du jur to hang Perry.

Palin took fed money to make guardasil available.

This is a witch hunt issue.
Only the EO was an issue and Perry has come clean on that, rather than muddying things with lies like some have done.

Bachmann lost her support last night...she conducted herself in such a manner...most have lost complete respect for her. She teamed up with RINO Romney...and lost....if she’d have conducted herself in the manner taught to her as a believer...she’d have come out on top instead of on bottom....this is what is called crashed and burned...

No, but he has more experience governing a Huge diverse electorate than any candidate on the stage other than Obama, and I would Argue that Obama is a pathetic failure on all levels.

I’m not addressing anything to do with Perry. I have only addressed the issues with Gardasil.

Well you had better beat up a whole lot of people, because lots of people have touched Gardasil.

Bachmann hasnt, she has the luxury of having never governed.

Even if tried and proven effective, vaccines have an associated risk. Since most vaccines are complicated molecules (polypeptides), perfect purification is all but impossible. If possible, it’s best to defer taking a vaccine until sufficient time (couple of years) has passed since it’s introduction.

Bachman confessed to spreading unconfirmed rumors only she did not say it that way.

On Hannity she claimed she was repeating what an unknown and undisclosed person said.
