Will the President and Congress Send a Message to Turkey and Egypt That An Attack Upon Israel Will
Baltimore Jewish Life ^ | 9/13/11 | Ed Koch, Former Mayor, New York City

Israel is now surrounded by Arab and other Muslim nations who believe this is the moment when they can finally destroy the Jewish state. They tried and failed to conquer Israel in five different wars since 1948. They are still trying.

Since the "Arab Spring" revolts in the Arab heartland of Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Yemen and Syria, opinion-makers in the Western world have sought to glamorize those revolutions by comparing them to those by which eastern European countries freed themselves from Communist regimes imposed on them by the Soviet Union.

So when the uprisings took place against the existing repressive Arab governments, the media labeled the various revolutions the "Arab Spring." That title was intended to convey that finally, the Arabs, heretofore stuck in medieval times, had come out of those dark ages and were now to be applauded and welcomed to the western world.

Some observers, including myself, have voiced great concern about the blind support in the west, particularly in our government, for the Arab revolutionary movements everywhere. In my view, it was harmful to our own -- the U.S. -- national security needs to throw the President of Egypt Hosni Mubarak under the bus by demanding his removal as President Obama did. Yes, he was a despot, described as an authoritarian in a world of Muslim dictatorships, but he believed in keeping good relations with the U.S. and keeping the peace with Israel established back in 1978 by Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin at Camp David. Those who overthrew him have made clear that their intention is to end that peace. The forces that are dominant in Egypt today are the military, the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists. The goal of the military is to preserve their special niche as the principal governing power. The Muslim Brotherhood

Obama has zero credibility. Even if he sent a message, and even if he meant it—which is extremely doubtful—he is now widely perceived in the Muslim world as a wimpy pushover.

When Bush told Kaddafi to back down or else, Kaddafi believed Bush’s threat, so he backed down.

Obama has zero credibility at this point. He has gone around the world making a fool of himself.

Turkey is a NATO member. If Turkey attacks Israel and the IDF responds, then the United States would be committed to defend Turkey.

They tried and failed to conquer Israel in five different wars since 1948.
And in the 800 years before that, they never stopped trying.

They don’t seem to care that Israel has at least a few hundred nuclear bombs. Talk about a death wish! Unknown about the delivery methods. But it’s a sure bet that Israel will deliver some of these nukes by submarine or jet aircraft if Israel itself is overrun by Arab baby-killers. Turn the Arab capitals into glass. Better yet, do it at the first sign of an attack on Israel.

No, they’ll just make the Egyptians and Turks read the full title of the article, which will give the IDF time to prepare, react, and avoid any potential attack, much like this run-on sentence does.

Some time shortly after the high tech special ops decapitation of the Taliban in Afghanistan, a Syrian interviewed at a coffeehouse in Damascus was heard to opine: "Obviously, it is not a good idea to upset the Americans."

Can anyone imagine such an opinion being expressed by the Arab street today?

Israel should state very succinctly right now that if any Muslim nation ever attacks them again, Israel will deport all Palestinians. Those in Gaza to Egypt, and those in the West Bank to Jordan.

Then, Gaza will cease to exist as a territory, being fully integrated with Israel, and Arabs who are Israeli citizens will be given those lands currently occupied by the Palestinians on the West Bank, though it will be integrated with Israel as well, so the foreign borders will be policed by Israel.

The all mosques in the rest of Israel will be razed, including al-Asqa.

But this can be avoided simply by no Arab nation attacking Israel.

That's exactly right -- and it sure makes for an interesting diplomatic quandary for the U.S., doesn't it?

Egypt is a whole different story with a completely different twist: the U.S. has treaty obligations to BOTH Israel and Egypt under the very specific circumstance involving one of these two nations attacking the other. This was one of the provisions of the Camp David accords signed by the three countries back in the 1970s.

I believe that Israel’s homegrown ballistic missiles can deliver warheads, even at that distance.

I would hope not, we've no obligation to defend Israel. Making our reaction to an attack clear in advance, that could be helpful.

What real diplomacy would require is a vague statement, that could be interpreted to mean that the US would jump into the fray on Israel’s side, or that could be interpreted to mean that the most the US would do was supply us. When asked to clarify, make it even more ambiguous.

I wholeheartedly agree that the US should not be joining the upcoming war. We’re the neighborhood tough guys, and we’ve got a reputation to uphold; i.e., we fight our own battles, and win. Lose that rep, and you invite more conflict.
