Scientists: Bacteria spreading in warming oceans

BRUSSELS (AP) — Warning: The warming of the world's oceans can cause serious illness and may cost millions of euros (dollars) in health care.

That is the alarm sounded in a paper released online Tuesday on the eve of a two-day conference in Brussels.

The 200-page paper is a synthesis of the findings of more than 100 projects funded by the European Union since 1998. It was produced by Project CLAMER, a collaboration of 17 European marine institutes.

The paper says the rising temperature of ocean water is causing a proliferation of the Vibrio genus of bacteria, which can cause food poisoning, serious gastroenteritis, septicemia and cholera.

"Millions of euros in health costs may result from human consumption of contaminated seafood, ingestion of waterborne pathogens, and, to a lesser degree, though direct occupational or recreational exposure to marine disease," says the paper. "Climatic conditions are playing an increasingly important role in the transmission of these diseases."

The article is mostly “crap” and that is a very appropriate description of the article. Vibro Cholera will have greater numbers in warm water. However, the article does not relate the increase in temps to any specific part of the world with specific numbers on the increase in water temperature. This alone makes the article scientific crap. Vibro Cholera is spread via individuals that are infected with Vibro Cholera and is spread via the local water sources when they void themselves and as I said, crap is very appropriate for this article.

If you want to argue science give me water temps, colonies per ml, local environment, pollution sources, public water supply conditions, etc, etc, etc.

The article is political advocacy and not science. If you want science follow this link. It is long and complex but it is real science and not CRAP!

So keep writing those big checks to us climate scientists or suffer the consequences.

Well, when truth doesn’t work, try extortion.

” - - - Philippart said some of the effects could even themselves contribute to global warming.
The greater acidification of the ocean might mean that algae would be able to capture less carbon dioxide, she said. “Then there will be a further increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, leading to greater warming.” - - - “

This is a classic example of junk scientists not bothering to use The Scientific Method.

1.) Notice the word “might” (implying doubt) in the third line above.
2.) Notice in the 4 th line that doubt has been replaced by the implied certainty phrase: “Then there will be.”
3.) Then comes the money statement “ - - - leading to global warming. “

Grants are renewed! Hail to Junk Science! Long live the speculation leap from doubt to certainty!

The Enviroweenies are looking for another scam to sell Global Warming to the ignorant masses.

We would love to have warming oceans! It would make the weather in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas so much wetter! Unfortunately, La Nina is BACK... And the Pacific is getting COLDER

100% CORRECT! Due to the prevailing winds from the South West, most of the rain in Texas is a function of water and air temps in the Pacific Ocean. The coastal regions of Texas do get rain as a function of the Gulf of Mexico. However Texas as a whole is dependent on Pacific Moisture.

La Nina has cooled the Pacific. A result of this is less moisture in the airflow from the prevailing winds in Texas. Less moisture means less rain and less cloud cover. Less cloud cover means very high day time temperatures and moderately higher night time temps dependent on the normal local cloud cover. If the local cloud cover in normal conditions is high, La Nina could actually cause night time temps to be moderately lower instead of higher.

When we have El Nino (high temps in the Pacific) life is good in Texas. When we have La Nina (low temps in the Pacific) the weather in Texas sucks. The weather pattern that caused the "Dust Bowl" was several years of La Nina. I hope we are not repeating this.

Therefore we must immediately spend trillions of dollars to reduce CO2 output and send us all back to the stone age with highly priced energy only a few apparatchiks can afford. Government can simply pass some laws forbidding any resultant disease outbreaks. Maybe it can incarcerate the bacteria and viruses that break the new laws.

ALL: Go to post # 21 and read the article in the hot link.

It is a peer-reviewed article, and uses most parts of The Scientific Method.

Then read the junk science article, AND SEPARATE FACTS FROM OPINIONS ! If you just read the facts, junk science articles are a fast read.

cpdiii: Thanks for the hot link that “keeps everything turning to the right.”

Seed the oceans with ice cubes and chlorinate the water. Problem solved.

Hmmm.....since this report is coming from Europe the source of the contagion just might be from onshore into the seas (from rivers, canals, sanitation stations outflow, overflow or just plain out dated technology) but once it gets into the food chain in the oceans it's wild. Not necessarily due to warming sea temperatures but that's a good way to raise money which Europe doesn't have.

Scientists: Bacteria spreading in warming oceans

All findings are subject: "Have you personally, or your research, or anyone on your team ever been subsidized by a group that promotes the fairy tale of AGW?"

If so, how do you expect to be considered credible?

My primary comment however, is: "You aren't truly considered a scientist when it's obvious you performed your research in a meth lab..."
