The number of Americans in poverty has jumped to an incredible 27-year high, with almost one in six people now falling into the bracket.
More than 46 million people, or 15 per cent, are in poverty - which is up from 44 million, or 14 per cent, in 2009, the Census Bureau said.
The report highlights the huge economic challenges facing President Barack Obama and Congress as they battle to save the U.S. economy.

Well, to their credit they *did* say they were going to invest in the poor, and it looks like they are getting a good return: poor is going up - a lot! Why, they might even double the poor, making for a fantastic 100% return on their investment.
The quickest way to double this “historical” number is to import twice the poverty we’re importing now. States need to offer more handouts and more “DREAM Acts”. Amnesty is on the way. Our “poverty” numbers are going to go out of site! The whining from the ‘RATS is going to become unbearable for the taxpaying American however.
Since these are Census numbers, that one in six AMERICANS figure is a lie. The Census clowns pimped the illegal aliens hard to get them to participate.
