Bachmann is making the case that opposing vaccinations required by the state is fundamentally a conservative issue, which is news to many conservatives given that mandatory vaccinations have been around as long as they have, and, to my knowledge, we haven’t made it a big part of the Republican platform to oppose them. But if you listened to Bachmann last night, it’s clear that she believes this is the type of issue on which a presidential candidate must stand, must do the right thing, and cannot waver in putting this forth as a conservative principle lest we risk infecting millions of children with mental retardation.
Has this always been an enormous part of this warrior’s soul? Apparently not.
By all appearances, she felt no need to mention, much less work towards stopping, a vaccination that, by her own standards, is an assault on liberty. Even more so actually. The HPV vaccination, while called mandatory, made available an opt-out provision so that the parental rights that she felt were so paramount could be protected in this decision. The Hepatitis B vaccination in Minnesota (state law since 1993) doesn’t even require parental consent at all. And Hep B’s communicability is similar to HPV in that it is primarily transmitted through intercourse, as opposed to being an airborne illness. Currently, no records can be found of Michele Bachmann sponsoring legislation in the Minnesota legislature to repeal the Hep B vaccination or to add a parental opt-out.

A. Personal Exemption States
Thirteen states that mandate Hepatitis B vaccination for schoolchildren
(Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, North
Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin) provide broad
room for exemption on personal grounds. Such grounds may be religious, of
course, but may also be moral or philosophical. In these states, a parent need
simply follow the pertinent statutory language, which usually requires written
certification of the parent’s objection to vaccination. Arizona and Colorado
additionally require language on the parental request for exemption stating the
parent’s appreciation of the risks of non-vaccination. And Minnesota requires
that the certification be notarized. Generally speaking, however, in the thirteen
states whose immunization statutes grant a personal belief exemption, parents
who follow the form of the law may successfully keep their children from
Hepatitis B vaccination.
The point of the article is that she does not seem to be against ALL state mandated vaccines, nor even against ALL state mandated vaccines for sexually transmitted diseases. Her outrage seems to be limited to Gardasil, and that appears to be because she thinks she can gain a political advantage from it.
This is pure politics. Is Bachmann carrying MittCare Romney's water here or Obama's? Doesn't matter, no difference. Too bad. I liked Bachmann. But she is now politically dead to me...
I agree Perry made a mistake in using an EO for this vaccine, especially on such a short time frame. If he believed in it, he should have used leadership to put it in place like was done with the previous vaccines.
That said, I see Executive Orders as part of the checks and balances within our three tiered government. As the Texas Legislation showed, the EO wasn't without its own check and balance.
Not all executive orders are a bad thing. Some have been used rather effectively for conservative policy.
How about this: The Hep-B vaccine has been around for 30 years, and it's mandated use occured when people weren't nearly as scientifically and mathmatically illiterate as they are now. The HPV vaccine is new, so public policy hasn't been set, and people today are stupid enough to believe that a vaccine that could save thousands of lives a year is evil because about 0.0043 percent of people who have had it suffered serious consequences (yes, including death).
The same type of opt out exists in Texas. Why is it acceptable for Bachmann in Minnesota but not in Texas?
At this point, Bachman is grasping at straws. Her poll numbers have foundered, and it now looks like a race between Perry and Romney (failing Palin getting into the race). She had to find some issue to thwart Perry’s ascendancy. This feigned outrage makes her look petty, and will not affect the race one whit. Too bad, because I like Bachman.
Dick Cheney was on a show last week talking about EO’s.
They have a purpose if used as they were intended.
This is not one of them. They shouldn’t be used to bypass the will of the legislature. I don’t care about Perry’s description of “good intent”.

Well, I do. I was outraged by her attack on Perry on this issue. It was vicious and over the top and not supported by the facts.
You can find a study which will prove anything. The statistics she used have been proven flawed (to my satisfaction).
Apparently this is the main issue she and others can find to use against Perry. Which kinda says something good about him in my opinion.
That and distorting his stand about the border. Don’t come to Texas from Minnesota and pretend you know something about border issues.

If you were president, you’d be singing the praises of EO if you could use it against obamacare. It’s just a tool. It’s like the line item veto. An executive can use it to trim budgets to the bone or he can use it as a bargaining tactic (vote for my stuff or I’ll veto your pork)
The author of this article points out that she was not opposed to mandating “other” vaccines that also spread as a result of “behavioral choices”. Seems like you did not read the artcile.
You are just WRONG. She got on television and said it caused mental retardation. With no scientific or medical backup she throws this out as fact. How many parents now won’t get this preventive vaccine because of fear? If it was just a parental issue should have kept the talking points she used during the first debate, however, desperation and hysteria has set in Ms. Bachmann.

indy, this issue came up big time when Kaye Bailey ran against him for governor. He won easily. She tried to use it against him. It’s not an issue that is huge among the general population. It’s only huge to people hoping to defeat or discredit Perry.
This is so sad. I’m for Palin but if she doesn’t come in, I am so glad Perry is in.
Does everyone realize that if it were not for Perry, Mitt would be a shoo in at this moment?
