Perry courts religious voters, calls for defense of ‘Christian values’

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Republican presidential candidate and Texas Gov. Rick Perry used his speech to a packed audience at the conservative evangelical Liberty University to discuss his own faith – and to call for more Christian influence on America.

The governor, whose speech at the university was scheduled long before his presidential announcement, is looking to burnish his already-strong evangelical credentials ahead of early primaries in Iowa and South Carolina, two states with heavy numbers of evangelical voters.

[snip]

He said that his “communion with God” had helped him find the path for his life.

Interweaving biblical anecdotes, Perry called on the audience of young conservatives to engage in politics.

“Don’t muzzle your voice because you’re young,” he said. “You have the right, like every American, to speak your right. You have the right to insist on change, to tell the people in power that you will not have your inheritance spent or your future mortgaged. This country is your country as well. Don’t leave it to a bunch of Washington politicians to tell you how to live your life. This is your future that we are debating today. Don’t be silent.”

Perry’s criticism of Washington drew cheers from the 10,000 students in attendance, but the loudest applause line came when Liberty University President Jerry Falwell, Jr. spoke. Falwell shared an anecdote that he said reaffirmed that Perry was "strongly pro-life" and "strongly pro-NRA", two lines which received louder applause than any of Perry's own comments.

Oh goody, another "educational thread."

And just what do "Christian values" entail? Communitarianism?

The bulk of "Christian" denominations think that government taking money by force, supposedly to do "good," constitutes "charity." Our "compassionate conservative" George Bush thought that way. Does Rick Perry think that way? Do you?

The best way to know if a person is a Christian is how honest they are.

You have absolutely NO clue as to what Liberty University believes about government intrusion.

I read a post of yours earlier this morning. I pray that you might find someway to dump all of this bitterness that is consuming you.

Best thing we can do is get the kids out there standing up for Christian values. I know it’s hard because the other side can be so vicious, but they need to get active.

As a corollary to my highly educational post on vacuous candidate boosterism plugging the forum sidebar as well as Mr. DoughtyOne's equally educational reply, getting in early with the appropriate question re this fine example of calculatedly lame and ambiguous candidate blather (of which Sarah Palin is especially guilty), is (hopefully) an effective countermeasure.

I don't think you have to worry your little heart a bit about that any more than you already have.

In the mean time, I think I'll go back to milling boards.

10,000 students required to be at the convocation this morning to hear Perry speak. My grandson was one.

The Christian who lies (which covers them all), will experience remorse and repent. This is a clear sign.

Video

"Republican presidential hopeful Texas Gov. Rick Perry urged an evangelical audience to “do what Ronald Reagan did at the apex of the Cold War which is to speak past the oppressors and the illegitimate rulers and directly to their people.” Perry appeared at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia.

“It is important that [pastors] stand in the pulpit every day and defend those values, those Christian values. America is going to be guided by some set of values - the question is going go to be - whose values?” said Perry. “I believe that… it’s the Christian values that this country was based upon.”

If anyone has it, please post it.

Thanks.

I believe atheists know of God’s existence, and their ideology is self-deception.

In trying to argue why God doesn’t exist, atheists somehow always end up giving reasons for why they don’t like God.
