Southland [California] Residents Report Seeing Strange Lights In The Night Sky
CBS ^ | September 14, 2011 9:18 PM

Posted on 09/14/2011 10:21:29 PM PDT by BenLurkin

Residents in and around the Southland and southwest US Wednesday reported seeing a series of strange lights up in the sky.

Viewers described shooting lights, with many colors, including many reports saying the object or objects “had a tail.”

The first reports came from Riverside County. Within a half hour of the first reports, several Orange County residents also reported seeing the lights. After about an hour, reports were coming from all over the West.

Most say the lights are “blue and green.” A few described the lights as yellow or orange.

CBS2 and KCAL9 first received emails and phone calls from Murrieta, Perris, Irvine, Ontario, Riverside, Lake Forest, Corona and San Clemente.

Additionally, police also report they have gotten many calls wondering what the lights are.

UPDATE: (8:30 p.m.): Some residents of Arizona have reported seeing the lights as well.

UPDATE: (8:52 p.m.): Residents of Nevada, many in Las Vegas, are also reporting the green-blue lights in the sky.

UFO’s? Several days ago, NASA announced a dead satellite would fall to Earth by “September’s end” but so far, no official confirmation if the lights and satellite are linked.

Curt Kaplan of the National Weather Service says the object “was probably a meteor.” The director of the Griffith Observatory concurred. Ed Krupp told us that what was seen tonight was likely “a piece of interplanetary debris that passed through the Earth’s atmosphere and burned up.”

He added, “This kind of thing happens about once a year, or once every few years.”

Some viewer and eyewitness accounts follow:

Anonymous: “I was on my cell outside, in City of industry when I looked up and saw the green, orange falling object about 7:40 p.m. As I saw it my buddy was on his way home on the 91 and he saw it at the same time. “

Bernadette: “I live in Quartz Hill. It was green in color and very large.”

Francesa D: “I live in Chino it looked like a falling star at first and continued on forever with a reddish green tail behind it before it was too low to see anymore. “

Chasen H: “I was on the 405 South and saw a bright light in the east. I thought it was a helicopter with its searchlight on but saw it aim downward, turn green and streak towards the ground. I was at the Carson/Harbor Gateway border at the time.”

Terr: “I am in south Ontario. My daughter and I were in the driveway as we saw the fiery yellow and orange falling. We thought maybe it was a firework of some sort. But wasn’t. It was very bright and pretty big in size. We lost sight of it behind trees.”

How does a meteor achieve such colors?

Different elements, calcium, for instance, will burn green.

The color of shooting stars, or meteors, is determined by two factors: the chemical composition of the meteoroid and the interaction of the its atoms with the molecules in the atmosphere.

The atoms in the meteoroid emit light because they are heated up by entering the atmosphere, and so they burn and release different wavelengths of light, or different colors, in the same way that putting different compounds into fireworks makes them explode in different colors.

The atoms in the atmosphere are ionized by the hot meteroid, causing them to emit photons of certain specific wavelengths, depending on what elements are present.

“It was Obama’s approval numbers plummeting to earth”

Couldn’t be. They’d burn with a pinkish-red glow.

Sure, they travel through space for millions of miles and what do these advanced beings think to include on their spacecraft? Lights.

If you think about it, that’s ridiculous.

There includes a choppy excerpt from the video of the object changing directions at about the :45 mark.

I was fortuanate to see the raw video as it was played for the first time on Channel 9 in the preceding hour. It was longer in duration, easier to see teh object, and did not have the distracting “ring”.

“Green Flashes” Reported in Night Sky Across Western U.S.
KTLA News

9:32 PM PDT, September 14, 2011

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (KTLA) — Reports have flooded the western United States from people seeing what they have described as “green fireworks” in the sky.

The California Highway Patrol says it has received reports of a fast-moving green flashes of light from Riverside, Palm Springs, Indio and the Salton Sea.

People in Phoenix, Yuma and Las Vegas also reported seeing the flashes.

The FAA has confirmed that the unidentified flashes in the sky are not a plane.

The National Weather Service and other agencies are saying unofficially that the sighting is likely a meteorite.

“It’s probably just an isolated meteor that shot from the west to east,” meteorologist Curt Kaplan of the National Weather Service told the Los Angeles Times.

Thanks fo ryou post Most (if not all) of those, however, are NOT it.

I went looking on youtube and was disappointed (but not surprised) to see videos of other meteors being passed off as the one tonight.
