Why Rick Perry is the likely GOP nominee
Hot Air (Green Room) ^ | Sept 15, 2011 | Karl

After Monday’s debate in Florida, most people expected Rick Perry’s rapid rise to the top of the polls for Republican presidential candidates to slow or halt, having taken a beating over the Gardasil mandate and immigration. His attack on Social Security was supposed to scare off seniors. However, as RealClearPolitics reported last night, a new poll by Insider Advantage shows Perry grabbing a nine-point lead in the Sunshine State in a survey taken the next day…

(snip)

In the last 40 years, conservative dominance has been the way of the world in Republican presidential politics. The party has nominated some relatively moderate candidates, like Nixon, George Bush, and Bob Dole, but it was only after they had convinced enough Republican voters that they were sufficiently conservative.

In other words, a candidate aligned with the Northeastern, moderate wing of the party has not won a nomination since 1960, and there is no reason to expect that to change, barring some kind of once-in-a-century realignment of the two political parties. Northeastern Republicans are now junior partners in the party coalition. They cannot deliver their own states anymore, as the Democrats dominate them all except New Hampshire and Pennsylvania; meanwhile, conservatives in the Midwest, South, and West can deliver their states, and so they now basically run the show.

Which brings us to Mitt Romney, whose basic political problem is that he comes from the Northeastern wing of the party…

Tomorrow's cover of Time Magazine:

Perry takes the entire south, Iowa, and much of the west and midwest.

Buh-bye Willard.

That “5 O’Clock dark shadow” image reminds me of Time’s OJ cover photo.

There have been posts on this website suggesting the general situation with Perry is that although when campaigning he might have the twang of a southern conservative, underneath all that beats the heart of an elitist RINO.

People are desperate for the truth, and he’s telling it vis a vis Social Security.

I think Perry has it in the bag as well, the structure of the primaries and all, but that is one unflattering picture of Rick Perry. Figures the rag would give him the unflattering light, while the Obamas’ pics are airbrushed.

We'll see.

There is still an all-out assault on him from the left and from pockets of the right.

If his numbers today still look similar in a month, then yes he'll win it. If the attempt at demonizing him succeeds, then it will be Romney.

What kind of mealy-mouthed nonsense is that? There have been “posts on this website suggesting” all sorts of strange things.

So what? What’s your point?

The MSM is at it again, trying to pick the loosing opponent for 0bama.

Just give me Sarah Palin...she can win it all.

These liberal rags always do this to Repubs. Try and make them look scary/old/weird/etc. I don’t know why they don’t demand approval of the images.

The bottom line here is despite his faltering debating style, Perry is still the candidate who appeals to the grass roots of the Republican Party. More to the point, Romney’s clear edge on the podium does not cancel out the fact conservatives neither like nor trust him. That may render his nomination ultimately impossible.

The coming weeks may provide sterner tests for Perry, and his lead may shrink in the coming months. But if Romney cannot make up some ground with conservatives and Tea Partiers, it may not matter how many debates he wins. As this poll demonstrates, the nomination is still Perry’s to lose.

Can someone ease my concerns about Perry. I mean, I really like the guy and will support him but...

1. He didn’t do to well in his first two debates. Will he/can he improve?

2. There’s no doubt that his views on SS, while accurate, will be used against him by the Rats. They’re going to pound him relentlessly with this. If he loses the senior vote over this, he’s in trouble.

3. I have concerns that many independents view him as extreme (not only on the SS issue but also on his religious views) and the Dems are going to take advantage of this, should Perry be our nominee.

I know this is not a popular view but right now, I think Romney would beat Obama. I’m not as confident Perry would.

I don’t think it’s unflattering. I think the pic makes him look manly.
