Bombshell: General accused WH of pressuring him to change testimony for Democratic donor
Hot Air ^ | September 15, 2011 | Ed Morrissey

Posted on 09/16/2011 7:14:42 AM PDT by george76

With the White House already reeling over the Solyndra collapse, a new scandal may have erupted today that could make the disappearance of $535 million in taxpayer funds look like a paperwork glitch. Eli Lake starts off his new gig at The Daily Beast with a huge bombshell — an accusation made to members of Congress from a four-star Air Force general that claimed the White House pressured him to change his testimony to boost a big donor to the Democratic Party:

...

Rep. Mike Turner told Eli that this was definitely an attempt to influence Shelton, bias his testimony, and essentially mislead Congress. And that has a watchdog organization drawing parallels between Shelton’s accusation and the Solyndra collapse...

If the White House has been leaning on the military to mislead Congress in order to benefit Democratic donors, that indicates a whole new level of corruption, one that could seriously damage the non-partisan nature of civilian control of the military.

I love straight shooters and I hope every single one of them that’s left in the military will stand up against the crap this administration has done to the US military.

If the White House interfered with the military like this on a mere money issue, what do you think the chances are that they also told Judge Denise Lind what “her” decision would be in the Terry Lakin case, which was about the much more critical issue of Obama’s ability to legally inhabit the White House?

I think Sloan rightly identified that this isn’t an isolated incident; the pattern is becoming clear. And the reach is also becoming clear; the buy-offs and coercion extend to military functions as well as to private-sector start-ups. It includes attempting to willfully deceive Congress in its official functions as well as willfully obstructing Congressional investigations.

For private-sector donors, the quid pro quo is money. For the judiciary the quid pro quo is appointments, which yield power as well as salaries. What are the chances that Obama’s buy-off scheme DOESN’T extend to Sotomayor and Kagan for past services rendered as well as future services to be rendered?

Put a lawless skunk in power and soon EVERY BRANCH is suffocated with the stench.

the Pentagon has been raising concerns about a new wireless project by a satellite broadband company in Virginia called LightSquared, whose majority owner is an investment fund run by Democratic donor Philip Falcone.

Gen. Shelton was originally scheduled to testify Aug. 3 to a House committee that the project would interfere with the military’s sensitive Global Positioning Satellite capabilities, which control automated driving directions and missile targeting, among other things.

Shelton’s prepared testimony was leaked in advance to the company. And the White House asked the general to alter the testimony

The General had reservations about the LightSquared broadband satellite system could seriously the reliability of our GPS navigation systems. So plus the corruption, our weapons delivery systems are greatly affected.

Apparently "The Administration" thinks it can do anything and anything else can be damned..

If there was just one democrat senator with an ounce of integrity, they would ask for zero’s resignation.... now.

It’s not at all clear (from the article) whether he gave them what they wanted or not.

You can be ‘pressured’ to do something and still not do it. You can ‘chafe’ at doing something and still not do it. I wish HotAir had made this clearer.

Sorry, but by definition bombshells only occur when a Republican is accused.

Exactly. This will not be reported by any of the major news outlets, except for Fox. It will not be reported by any major newspapers. It will not be on the evening news.

I wish all this was coming out AFTER the Dem primaries. Hillary might be pressured by the Dim hierarchy to throw her hat into the primary ring due to the burgeoning scandals.

She would win the primaries in a walk. She would NOT lose the black vote...they automatically vote Dim even if Vlad the Impaler was on the ballot.

We have to be careful WHAT we wish for and WHEN we want it to happen.

Hillary is a committed marxist, always has been, always will be. But in an election, she will look like Elsie Dinsmore compared to the fascist/commie Ali-Bama.

I say we should hope that Barack guts it out, doesn't resign or get impeached and remains unopposed in the upcoming elections.

As far as you know, did the General actually alter his testimony in committee by muting or not raising his objections, or by endorsing the donor's project in some roundabout, low-key manner?

The testimony is public record....and I don't know why this salient point isn't being addressed in the breaking news.

Ah, but the question is: If the blacks sensed "The First (Really) Black President" was forced out by the Democrat establishment, would they vote? At all?

Recall that blacks continue to give almost unanimous approval to The One -- despite his utter failure.

As a classmate and friend of Willie’s, I could not agree with you more. They definitely picked the wrong guy to pressure. It’s probably been a while since this administration has dealt with a man of honor and character.

I had heard that as well - that the Clinton years took a deep toll on the military.

But I think about the Marcus Luttrells and so on out in the field, and I have a hard time believing that all of them would be either politicized hacks or else neutered beyond the point of being able to stand up for what is right.

I’ve got 3 nephews in the USMC right now, including my godson who is an officer. The thought of the military taking these strong-minded men of integrity and making sausage out of them by convincing them that orders from above are as infallible as if they were from God is unbearable to me.

Somebody tell me whether that’s what is going to happen.

He said the pressured him to alter his testimony. Show us where it says he actually DID alter it? My guess is he did not.

Do the men of honor and character see what Obama is doing to the military? Do they really believe that it doesn’t matter whether or not Obama is a forging, perjuring fraud who has stolen the White House by a coup? If Obama had issued an order to this guy to testify such-and-so would this guy have done it because he mustn’t question “lawful orders”?

As I said in another post, I’ve got 3 nephews in the USMC including my godson who is an officer. I love and respect the people in the military who are sacrificing dearly for the sake of this country. I keep wondering where the men of honor are. Maybe they’re all in Afghanistan and Iraq. Maybe that’s really why Obama agreed to the surge. I don’t know. The whole thing has me baffled. In the past 2 years I have come from thinking the US military was the greatest entity on earth to wondering exactly whose side they’re on and whether any of them take their oath seriously. I don’t want to offend anybody in the military, but that’s my gut-level reaction to the stuff I’m seeing, and I hate it that the criminal-in-chief has been able to make even this institution seem stinky to me.

"Would they vote, at all?"

Yes, the majority would. The hard core blacks (government employees, union workers, etc.) always come out.

Many of the rest are gently persuaded by the swarms of street "community organizers" and ward heelers in major cities across the fruited plain to get over to the polls to vote....and the usual Christmas turkeys or cheap wine will be yours in December. This is how Obama got his training wheels....as a street-hustling pimp for black votes to deliver to the Dems and make his bones.

As a native of the Chicago suburbs, I know how the huge black Dem vote in the Windy City alone is often enough to wag the electoral vote for the entire state of Illinois.

My husband was in the Air Force. I asked him once if generals lie. He said “Of course they do. How do you think they get to be generals”? That has always stuck with me.

Why would he even bring it up then? People pressure others all the time, but why would a 4 star even mention it if he didn’t feel the need to CYA? Air Force Space Command is an extremely political organization and people watch themselves carefully. It is one command that reaches the highest and lowests levels of the entire military. I cannot imagine a 4 star speaking out like this without the absolute need to do so.

Re-post on the attackwatch site. The humor is being used there for good purpose, I actually first heard of this scandal there and posted about it on FR a couple of hours ago. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2779332/posts That little twitter site is reaching people that even FOX, FR and Limbaugh don’t reach, just because it’s so funny.
