Shots fired at Davis-Monthan AFB
KGUN TV9 Tucson ^ | 9-16-2011 | Forrest Carr

Posted on 09/16/2011 12:27:31 PM PDT by Tarantulas

The KGUN9 News desk has received call from half a dozen people saying that David-Monthan AFB is on lockdown due to a possible shooter in the Civil Engineering building. KGUN9 News has not been able to reach anyone in authority to confirm those calls. One caller said she was inside the BX grocery store in the base when an announcement came over the PA stating that the store's doors would be locked due to reports of a shooter on base with an AK 47. Three callers stated that there were up to 2 shooters and that multiple shots had been fired. Stay with KGUN9 News for more on this developing story.

Update: Davis-Monthan has just provided a brief statement to the media confirming the lockdown but giving no other information. The statement reads, "D-M has reduced movements to single-point entry due to a potential security situation. Officials are currently investigating the situation, and more information will be forthcoming."

Strange that our Military Daughters and Sons have to Stand Down and not carry in a time of war. Liberals ... sheesh.

It's been that way for quite a while. When I was AD in the early 80's we weren't allowed to carry on base. Privately owned weapons had to be stashed in the armory. There may have been an exclusion for those in base housing but I don't really remember.

>there is a guy on the roof of a building with a gun and nobody is being allowed out of their buildings.

One chopper, one gun, one shot. End of drama.

If you live in government quarters on base with your family, you can have your private weapons in your quarters. You are usually required to registered each weapon with the MP station. We had a set of quarters broken into when I was at Fort Benning, GA back in late 1980s and the master sergeant who lived there had several thousand dollars worth of weapons stolen out of his quarters by local Columbus, GA gang bangers who came on base at night and drove around looking for places to break into. One night I was on the couch watching TV and there was a window in my quarters right next to the TV. Just an edge of the curtain was open and I saw an eye look into my living room right at me. I jumped up, grabbed my Glock and went out. The perp ran, jumped into a car with his gang lords from town and ran off. The quarters were located right next to a four lane high way that ran right through Fort Benning and it was easy for them to sprint right off base and be gone before anyone could get there. Now days of course, there are gates up and guards. But then, Benning was an open base and anyone could drive right onto the base.

That thought most definitely was addressed in my conversation:)

I haven't received any new updates but I'm pretty sure that I'll get the whole story during poker on Tues.

AFB Facebook page says the ambulance leaving the base is due to a pregnancy and not related to the security situation.

You lock down a school for a pregnancy?

Pregnant lady left ... lock-down continued. Think they took the baby away too with the pregnant lady. One gunman found (reported civilian). Do not know if there is a connection to the base by gunman, or if gunman knows anyone on base. Maybe gunman scared the pregnant lady into labor? Unknown.

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - "Please be patient." That is the latest word from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base about a lockdown that's been underway since late morning. There is no official word from the base about the nature of the security threat that led to the lockdown. But at last official report no shots had been fired and no one had been hurt. A Phoenix newspaper reported that officers had an armed man cornered, but no official sources have confirmed that.

Around midday the base posted this message on its Facebook page: "Davis-Monthan AFB is responding to a unconfirmed report of an individual with a weapon. Local agencies are engaged per standard operating procedures."

SWAT vehicles could be seen entering the base. Activity appeared to be concentrated in a structure identified as building 4300, said to be an old dorm building now used for Civil Engineering.

A helicopter crew from KGUN9 news partner KNXV-TV of Phoenix observed a file of several people wearing SWAT-style military clothing approaching the building early in the afternoon. The chopper was flying about five miles outside the base, and was using a telephoto lens to see the action..

The Arizona Republic, citing an unnamed source, reported Friday afternoon that SWAT was negotiating with an armed man holed up in the building. According to the Republic, there were no hostages and no shots had been fired.

But whatever is causing the lockdown, the situation still had not been resolved as of 4:10 PM Tucson time. The base was providing no further information. Nor was the Tucson Police Department returning calls or responding to emails from KGUN9 News.

The first indication that someone was up at the base came just before 11:00 AM, when the KGUN9 News desk began receiving calls from people who said they were on lockdown inside the base. Some of the callers said they'd heard an official announcement saying that a shooter or shooters had fired shots in the Civil Engineering building. One caller said she was inside the BX grocery store on base when an announcement came over the PA stating that the store's doors were being locked because of reports that a man was on base armed with an AK 47. Other callers told similar stories.

Read report of entire base being searched. Read report of one civilian barricaded inside of building. Has there been any report of a possible second person? Read something (obscure) where a report came up that there were two. Cannot confirm, and maybe is bogus. Have you seen any report which would cause you to think there is more than one person on base being sought?

Security incident response terminated

Release Number: 040911

9/16/2011 - DAVIS-MONTHAN AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. — Base officials have terminated the response to a potential security incident that began at 11 a.m. today.

Increased security measures were taken around the base following the unconfirmed sighting of a man entering an office building apparently armed.

Base officials are currently executing a controlled release of base personnel.

Federal Bureau of Investigation personnel, Tucson Police and Fire Departments as well as other emergency services personnel provided support to D-M personnel as they worked to investigate the situation.

With the help of the Tucson emergency services communities, Airmen were successful in maintaining the safety and security of the Desert Lightning Team.

“All reports regarding the safety and security of our Airmen and their families are taken seriously and we will continue to work to keep them secure,” said Col. John Cherrey, 355th Fighter Wing commander.

Information release of the ongoing operations were restricted to prevent the suspect from seeing or knowing what measures were being taken.

A statement will be made by Col. Cherrey at 6 p.m regarding the incident.

Media should be in place at the Craycroft Gate Visitor Center at 5:40 p.m.

For more information contact the 355th Fighter Wing Public Affairs at (520)228-3406.
