The First Lady has scored another victory in the battle of the bulge.

The CEO of Darden Restaurants, which owns eatery chains Olive Garden and Red Lobster as well as LongHorn Steakhouse and Capital Grille, said on Thursday the company will work to reduce fat and sodium by 10% over the course of the next five years and 20% over the next decade.

I only go to RL for the raw oysters and a Shipwreck Mary.

I’ll guess they’ll have to be freshwater oysters and shrimp now.

Damn, I had heard the Red Lobster biscuits are to die for. Guess I will settle for Cracker Barrel biscuits now.

Quid pro quo? Darden Restaurants got an ObamaCare waiver.

Among the waivers recently granted were for employers like Darden Restaurants, which operates the Red Lobster and Olive Garden restaurants, for 34,000 of its workers. Federal officials have granted 111 waivers to employers, insurers and union plans, who are responsible for covering about 1.2 million people.

There is a reason these restaurants plow butter and salt into their food.

Because it masks the quality of the ingredients.

Blech.

We patronize small local restaurants in our area. Great food, incredible variety and not chain fare. I do realize people in small towns don’t have the variety of restaurants and the chain groups are worse than WalMart at monopolizing the trade.

Olive Garden is the ridiculously priced for the crap they serve, all sauces, pasta and bread.

Their food was already flavorless garbage. You just had a hard time realizing such with all the fat and salt hiding that fact.

I am surprised to see Darden Restaurants didn't hold out for an Obamacare waiver. (or maybe they did get one)

They did, see Post 23

Their bisuits are the best thing there. Still, their new low fat, low salt stuff will probably be OK. Just have them bring you lots of melted butter to pour over it.

The food was rotten already, this will only make it worse.

Anybody who thinks Olive Garden is Italian cuisine is a blithering idiot. Overpriced frozen meat and pasta and sauce out of a can.

Carrabbas is extremely well-prepared and reasonably authentic Italian food, at the same prices as Olive Garden (around $14 and up for an entree - and Carrabbas generally includes salad, bread, and a veg of the day in that price).

Hey my daughter gave me a recipe that tastes just as good. She got it from the web. I just made a batch yesterday. Really good.

Wendy's still salts their fries, only now with sea salt. Still salty IMHO.

If they don’t have veal scallopini, it’s not an Italian restaurant.

Most of the time, Red Lobster is too liberal with the salt. But that’s what they should hear from their customers, not from the government.

They'll make it for you.

Trout is not always on the menu, either, but our regular waiter has the chef cook one up for me when we're there.

'Course, we're there a lot. That and the local family-owned Thai restaurant are where we usually go for dinner.

If it's a special deal like a birthday or anniversary, we go to the local wowza haute cuisine joint - Canoe on the Chattahoochee. Now THAT is good food -- but it's not very affordable. And the wine list will make your eyes bleed.
