Arrests Made in China Gutter Oil Scandal
Police have arrested 32 people suspected of producing and selling old cooking oil that has been illegally collected from restaurant gutters, according to a Ministry of Public Security statement Tuesday (in Chinese).
The statement said officials seized 100 tons of the recycled oil, which can contain carcinogens and other toxins that are harmful when consumed by humans. It said they also broke up a criminal network operating in 14 provinces and shut production sites where the oil is repurposed.
The suspects were caught in a swill-oil crackdown that launched in mid-July and is part of a broader effort to improve Chinas food safety, which remains a major headache for the countrys leaders even three years after its largest scandal erupted. In 2008, milk contaminated with the industrial chemical melamine killed at least six children and caused illnesses in nearly 300,000 others.

I know I’ll never use Soy Sauce again. ((shudder))
the Chinese will eat any ,will everything ,so what’s a little gutter oil
I’m not concerned about what they eat. I’m concerned about what they send to us to eat.
Those stories seem to have disappeared over the last couple of years.
Yeah, what did they do with the oil after confiscating it?
Next week we will read about their punishment. They will have been burned to death in this very same oil.
But hearing things that happen in ChiCom-land is not guaranteed.
Ping!
Word in Japan is that a similar form of cheap and dirty oil is also made by harvesting a type of disgusting river weed, or something —it’s used in bad restaurants for food.
I heard the problem is SOOO bad that locals will often BUY their own real oil, and hand it over to restaurant staff as a countermeasure for the food they intend to order.
I almost forgot! You know those delicious steamed buns that contain red, minced sweet pork?
A large batch of those exported from China to Japan were found to contain flavored bits of discarded tampons...!
I’m sorry but I’m deathly serious.
Are you saying Japanese has the same problem or they are just talking about problems in China?
I heard the problem is SOOO bad that locals will often BUY their own real oil, and hand it over to restaurant staff as a countermeasure for the food they intend to order.Ahhh... I think I would just quit going to restaurants.
I mean that the volume of health-fussy Japanese tourists to China is high enough that there’s sharp worry and consciousness of these type of Chinese scams in Japan.
Every so often there’s some kind of milk contamination in Japan, or a few veggies, but that’s about it (most recently of course there’s the question of radiation, but that’s recent).
That’s what I thought. Thanks for clarification.
Unless China is importing used tampons, I'm skeptical about this rumor. The Chinese market is 0% tampon-oriented. This compares to 2% tampon market share penetration in Hong Kong. Both %'s are abysmally-low by European and NA standards, but that's the way they roll.
I’m probably in error, here, as I’m a guy —it might indeed have been PADS, but to me it’s more or less all the same, and I just said, “tampons”.
To me it’s all just, “gross” so that’s why I typed that. ;)
Another one from about 10 years ago in Japan centered on milk —that some outfit in China had struck on a way to cook up something that seemed all to heck like milk but was not that at all.
Or it could have been artificial EGGS? It sounded amazing.
