Mayweather KO’s Ortiz in the fourth, but finish labeled dirty by many in attendance

Mayweather (42-0, 26 KOs) delivers another victory and wins the WBC title from Ortiz, but it may have been the most bizarre night of the great fighter's career.

The end of the fight was pure insanity. The bout was heating up in the fourth when Ortiz landed some solid shots and drove Mayweather into ropes. The 24-year-old got too aggressive and leapt into the air headbutting Mayweather.

Referee Joe Cortes wisely paused the fight. That's when Ortiz walked behind the ref's back to apologize and hug Mayweather. Cortes grabbed Ortiz and walked him back to center of the ring to dock him a point. From there, Cortes lost control of the fight.

The referee looked the other way while Ortiz again walked up to Mayweather in the middle of the ring with hands out in a peace offering. Mayweather hit him with a slapping left. Ortiz looked at Cortes, who was still in a haze, to ask what the heck just happened? That's when Mayweather delivered a right hand bomb straight down the pipe. Ortiz (29-3-2) went down and couldn't back to his feet. The fight was over just as it was really starting.

As if that wasn't embarrassing enough, Mayweather engaged in a ridiculous conversation with Merchant. The veteran announcer tried to press Mayweather on why he threw the punches when Ortiz clearly wasn't fighting. Mayweather refused to do so. Then he snapped getting in the face of Merchant, who finally fired back. It was a terrible moment for both.

Yawn. Floyd undergoes Olympic testing. Pac man refuses. That’s enough spam for tonight.

Also, Pac wouldn’t test during training, which is what Mayweather’s camp wanted.

Ortiz had his arms down after giving Mayweather a hug and saying “Sorry” you can even hear it on the recording and Mayweather hit him before he had a chance into transitioning from giving Mayweather a hug and apology into a defensive stance.

Mayweather basically hit him before he could bring his hands up to defend himself.

Completely unnecessary and it spoke volumes about the “man” Mayweather is.

Mayweather may be able to beat his wife, but he won’t beat Pac man unless he stretches out the excusing for another 3 years because he knows Pac Man will kick his ass.

FU, Floyd Mayweahter. This isn’t a street game of “Knockout King” ou freakin’ punk.

Sign to fight Pac Man now, or forever be known as the coward that you are.

Excuses.

Fight or STFU and stop making excuses as fighters are tested pre and post fight.

The gloves, water bottles, everything is tested.

Floyd is just a puss.

Mayweather took advantage of the absence of the referee known for his tag line, Fair but Firm. Cortez was obviously looking in the direction of a ringside official and Mayweather being the alert and (although many may say dirty) a pugilistic technician took advantage of a situation which could result in an edge for him did exactly what many fighters before him have done and many more will continue to do long into the future, hit his combatant with a prefect left right combination. I don’t agree with the tactic but it was perfectly legal.

What I seen was Mayweather systematically breaking down Ortiz (I would have loved to see Ortiz drop Mayweather and watched with hope) unfortunately for Ortiz the punches Floyd was landing were going to increase in intensity and eventually would have force Ortiz to withdraw from combat or be Knocked out running into a perfectly timed right lead as Victor came rushing in attempting to land a big shot to the head of Floyd . Anyone with any knowledge watching this fight could clearly see that it was just a matter of time before the fight would come to an end with Floyd’s hands being raised.

Anyone with a knowledge of boxing knows Ortiz is a slow starter and a strong finisher.

That sucker punch could have killed Ortiz, and Mayweather would still be ranting at Larry Merchant, who was incensed by Mayweather’s cheap shot and uncalled for, personal attack on Merchant during the post fight interview. Protect yourself at all times, but don’t sucker punch someone who just hugged you and apologized for a head butt and didn’t even get the chance to defend himself.

If anyone is on “roids” it’s the wife beater and ranting Floyd Mayweather.

I can’t wait to see Pac Man wipe up the floor with this ghetto thug and knock him into the cheap seats.

Great. Provide the link where he will blood test immediate before and after the fight.

I personally heard Pacquiao make that offer on the air. Mayweather IS a punk and a dirty fighter, as we saw tonight. He's got no chin and he's afraid of Pacquiao. Rightly so. He can slip a punch alright, but he's better at slipping good fights.

Saw it on replay, didn't look dirty as in rule-breaking - just classless and ugly. Also have to wonder what Ortiz's deal was - he was making a bigger production of apologizing than Obama does in front of foreign dictators. Ortiz was on his way to a TKO loss in a couple of rounds anyway - leave it to Mayweather to turn an easy win into an ugly controversy.

Sure. He’s a punk. He’s not a dirty fighter. He did nothing illegal nor wrong. Ortiz came at him with his hands down. Not only that. The conversation should be how dirty Ortiz was leading with that friggin head butt.

Thanks for the clip re the “knock out”. The referee could get a job in the White House protecting your rights’ at the polls....his primary job is to protect the respective fighters from potentially permanent injury which he did for Mayweather but not for Ortiz.

I wasn’t aware that boxing continues to exist! Mixed Martial Arts is 10x the entertainment and skill set.

Except after fifteen seconds and they end up on the floor like a couple of homos. No thanks.

Well Manny was a bit of a womanizer earlier in his career. In Filipino culture, men are seen as “macho” if they have mistresses. A couple years ago, he was caught leaving The Tonight Show with Filipina beauty, Krista Ranillo in the car. She had followed him to LA where he was training. After that, he really seems to have toned things down. I’m a Pacquiao fan but he’s no saint. He does have a strong faith, even if he falls short sometimes, just as we all do.

Too bad that fight counts on either fighters' record.

With any luck, the general opinion will be Mayweather was skeered he'd lose and a cheap shot was the only way could beat Ortiz.

Yes, that was one of the more flagrant, if not the most flagrant head butts I've ever seen. Made him look desperate. Can't wait to see the whole fight next week.

“From there, Cortes lost control of the fight”

I don’t agree. Ortiz lost control of himself.

“Larry Mechant is my hero for telling Mayweather ‘If I were 50 years younger, I would kick your @ss’”

Merchant was embarrassing. He’s a journalist, which doesn’t mean much, but in the very least means you’re not supposed to get personally wrapped up in the story. Mayweather, despite being a dumb boxer, ought to know how to control himself by now, with how much media he’s faced. But, hey, he is still just a boxer. And it is his career and reputation on the line here, not Merchant’s. Merchant must have known he’d be defensive, loudly and irrationally so. He must also know from their history that Mayweather hates him. He should have been the adult.

Oh yeah, and a 70 year-old Mayweather would probably destroy Merchant at 18. So stop making empty threats, old man.
