Bachmann's Vaccine Panic
gastongazette.com ^ | 9/18/2011 | Steve Chapman

Cancer treatment has made great progress in recent decades, but the tragedy is that so much of our effort to combat this scourge is just that: treatment. Once a disease appears, there is only so much that can be done. It would be far cheaper, more effective and less traumatic to prevent it.

A vaccine for cancer would be a triumph for public health. Did I say “would be”? Actually, it is. Such a vaccine exists for one of the biggest killers of women. But Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., is against it, and she’s not alone.

Two different vaccines block transmission of the human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes 70 percent of all cervical cancer in this country, as well as most anal cancers and some cancers of the throat, vagina and penis.

Each year, says the National Cancer Institute, more than 12,000 American women are diagnosed with cervical cancer alone, and some 4,000 will die of it. That’s not counting the genital warts HPV can cause.

It’s a nasty but very common bug that the world would be better off without. Universal inoculation would be a huge step toward eradicating it and the suffering it causes.

But there is a big impediment to its use: HPV is sexually transmitted, which makes the vaccine controversial — especially because to achieve maximum effectiveness, it has to be administered before the recipient becomes sexually active. And in this country, 6 percent of youngsters have sex by the age of 13.

Someone check my arithmetic for me, but if the annual death rate among women from HPV-caused cervical cancer is 70 percent of 4,000, and there are 150 million women living in the United States, the chance of getting it is somewhere in the vicinity of .000186 of a percent. So do we really want to spend the money, subvert our notions of personal freedom and place innocent people at risk in order to deal with so minuscule a threat?

Yup, the old “I used to love Michele Bachmann” cliches until she made Rick Perry look like a litte girl. If he’s such a genuis, why didn’t he stand up to her and refute her accusations? Instead, he looked like the eternal deer in the headlights. For some of us on FR, that was a real turnoff.

I’m sorry but Bachmann is a hypocrite.

In her state Heb B Vaccine is mandated with NO opt out.

Yet:

The hepatitis B vaccine has been linked to immunological and neurological disorders.

By Ben Howe, Red State

What’s worse than a mandatory vaccination that never actually came to law and, even if it had, contained an opt-out? According to Michele Bachmann, nothing. In fact, if you listen to Michele Bachmann these days, you’d think Governor Perry was strapping 12 year old children to tables to inject them when he takes breaks from using the other needle on inmates..................

By all appearances, she felt no need to mention, much less work towards stopping, a vaccination that, by her own standards, is an assault on liberty.

Even more so actually. The HPV vaccination, while called mandatory, made available an opt-out provision so that the parental rights that she felt were so paramount could be protected in this decision.

The Hepatitis B vaccination in Minnesota (state law since 1993) doesn’t even require parental consent at all. And Hep B’s communicability is similar to HPV in that it is primarily transmitted through intercourse, as opposed to being an airborne illness.

Currently, no records can be found of Michele Bachmann sponsoring legislation in the Minnesota legislature to repeal the Hep B vaccination or to add a parental opt-out.

There has never been a medical treatment, vaccine, or medicine developed that has not affected someone adversely. It, unfortunately occurs. However, in the absence of this life saving research and development, millions would die from the underlying conditions.

There have been people who have died on the operating table while having tonsils removed - does that mean we should no longer allow it, or worse yet, begin a class action suit to seek damages from all surgeons who have removed tonsils.

I once nearly died of anaphylactic shock following a penecilin dose. Do I think we need to not allow antibiotics to be administered? Not in a million years.

Though the following paraphrase has often been incorrectly attributed to Sun Tzu, IMO it applies to Bachmann...
"when you opponent is destroying herself, don't get in the way..."

SANEVax: Heart Broken Moms Offended By AAP Statements on Merck Gardasil

Open Letter to Dr. O. Marion Burton, president, American Academy of Pediatrics

Re: Heart-broken moms offended by statements of AAP on Gardasil®

September 16, 2011

Dear Dr. Burton:

On behalf of the thousands of parents who have either lost their perfectly healthy teenage daughters, or been left to endure the physical/mental/emotional and financial hardship of being forced to deal with the permanent disabling effects of Gardasil® vaccination, SANE Vax Inc. is offended by the thoughtless, ignorant and offensive press release issued from the office of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) on September 13, 2011.

The press release criticizes the comment made by Republican presidential candidate, Michele Bachmann regarding Gardasil® side effects as ‘false statements’; and instead stated authoritatively ‘…it (Gardasil®) has an excellent safety record.’

Are you still practicing pediatrics? Physicians in the U.S. look to the AAP for guidelines yet the AAP seems to be oblivious to the latest Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System. VAERS statistics clearly show that HPV Vaccines, Gardasil and Cervarix, have been associated with 22, 619 adverse reactions; 8,926 of those reports requiring emergency hospitalization; and 4,616 cases where the victim did not recover. Death reports stand at 102.

I would submit that they both “lost” in this exchange - Perry for not responding very intelligently as you state - and MB for going over the top and over dramatic and for not letting her scored points speak for themselves.

Perry should have simply responded “for someone who supports the biggest crony scam ever - ethanol subsidies - I’m surprised to hear that you are so concerned about it...” — or something like that. But he was not sharp enough or prepared enough to do so.

Disappointing X 2 for both of them IMO.

I've heard this cliche that Perry was brilliantly subverting Bachmann’s accusations. But as someone who knew nothing about Perry until a few weeks ago, it looked weak and indecisive.

You make some very good points! He will need to step up his game if he wants to get my vote. I don’t think Bachmann is going to get the nomination (although I like her very much) so I don’t like to see the other candidates stumbling around, looking foolish.

I wonder if he was prepared for Romney’s attacks, but not Bachmann’s...

Yes, yes, yes. You nailed it.

You are very disappointing. I never thought you would disrespect a good conservative christian woman. You really have to do that because she is expressing her opinion which is correct by the way. I wonder if you are even a conservative anymore. You certainly have gone more to the left with Perry that is for sure.
