Bachmann's Vaccine Panic

Cancer treatment has made great progress in recent decades, but the tragedy is that so much of our effort to combat this scourge is just that: treatment. Once a disease appears, there is only so much that can be done. It would be far cheaper, more effective and less traumatic to prevent it.

A vaccine for cancer would be a triumph for public health. Did I say “would be”? Actually, it is. Such a vaccine exists for one of the biggest killers of women. But Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., is against it, and she’s not alone.

Two different vaccines block transmission of the human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes 70 percent of all cervical cancer in this country, as well as most anal cancers and some cancers of the throat, vagina and penis.

Each year, says the National Cancer Institute, more than 12,000 American women are diagnosed with cervical cancer alone, and some 4,000 will die of it. That’s not counting the genital warts HPV can cause.

It’s a nasty but very common bug that the world would be better off without. Universal inoculation would be a huge step toward eradicating it and the suffering it causes.

But there is a big impediment to its use: HPV is sexually transmitted, which makes the vaccine controversial — especially because to achieve maximum effectiveness, it has to be administered before the recipient becomes sexually active. And in this country, 6 percent of youngsters have sex by the age of 13.

She wove the facts to give the impression that there was a Quid Pro Quo without any facts - This is wrong. Government has been mandating vaccines for years, The State of California mandated vaccines when Gov Reagan was in charge in California. This is not a big govt argument. This is controversy because it is a drug to prevent an STD and people complained that the Gov,t by mandating this drug, was giving young girls a license to have sex - which is ludicrous.

http://www.fda.gov/BiologicsBloodVaccines/SafetyAvailability/VaccineSafety/ucm179549.htm

“Gardasil Vaccine Safety
Information from FDA And CDC on the Safety of Gardasil Vaccine”

“This vaccine is an important cervical cancer prevention tool that will potentially benefit the health of millions of women. Every year, about 12,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and almost 4,000 die from this disease in the United States. Worldwide, cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women, causing an estimated 470,000 new cases and 233,000 deaths per year.”

“Concerns have been raised about reports of deaths occurring in individuals after receiving Gardasil. As of December 31, 2008, 32 deaths had been reported to VAERS. There was not a common pattern to the deaths that would suggest they were caused by the vaccine. In the majority of cases with available autopsy, death certificate and medical records, the cause of death was explained by factors other than the vaccine.”

“Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) has also been reported in individuals following vaccination with Gardasil. GBS is a rare neurological disorder that causes muscle weakness. It occurs spontaneously in unvaccinated individuals after a variety of specific infections. FDA and CDC have reviewed the reports of GBS that have been submitted to VAERS. To date, there is no evidence that Gardasil has increased the rate of GBS above that expected in the population. While we continue to carefully analyze all reports of GBS submitted to VAERS, the data do not currently suggest an association between Gardasil and GBS.”

“Based on the review of available information by FDA and CDC, Gardasil continues to be safe and effective, and its benefits continue to outweigh its risks.”

The luddites need to learn a different trick.

She went on Greta stating that a woman in the audience pulled her aside and told her that the shot made her daughter mentally retarded. Remember, the debate was hosted by CNN. You would think they would be able to find the woman who was in their studio audience to get an interview by now?

Correlation is not causation. Without knowing more about each of your anecdotes, it is impossible to say if Gardasil was the cause, a contributing factor, or had nothing at all to do with the incidents related.

They’re misogynists from the House of Romney, Perry, and Rove.

Why don’t you track her down yourself, witch hunter? You can join forces with Media Matters and George Soros to bring her before a panel of men lead by Judge Hawthorne. There’ll definitely be a few women who will join forces with you in executing her.

Because SOME still think even in this day of equality for women all over the place that if he attacked her back as she did him that he would like like the BULLY. Remember hilllereee and her opposition in the debate for NYC?

I think Perry did an excellent job making his point and still maintaining his professionalism and respect for women.

Yes, I know. They are a sad, sick bunch. My favorites are the women who join in. If they are not here already they will soon be showing up.

Are you saying it was Bachmann’s Mom that told her about the Gardisil’d daughter?

Oh shut up. I’m sick and tired of being called a rino, liberal, not a conservative, blah, blah, blah because I don’t toe the line in supporting both Palin and now Bachmann.

MB went beyond nuts when she made that ridiculous claim about the shot causing mental retardation. Instead of backing down she’s gone full throttle pushing this losing point. This blowback is all on her now.

Your attacks on Ms. Bachmann won't fly and will be answered.

It is NOT about Gardasil and its side effects
[and most have been ignored, and
will not even be known for decades].

It is about Gov. Perry's RINO behavior,
crony capitalism, the side deals and kickbacks,
and the irregular, vicious behavior of PerryBOTs and RomneyBOTs.

Have a great day.

I didn’t make the absurd claim. I’m not running for the top position in the US. She is. If she can’t tell the truth when asked then she’s not fit for office.

For the record, I’m a woman who is not pleased at all with how this issue of women’s health is being used for political gain by a woman.

I'm sick and tired of some Perry defenders dropping the "lie" word everytime somebody says something they don't agree with.

Some of us on FR think you are a grander wisher than even the Palinwishers.

I and “some on FR” still like Bachmann and think she is a true conservative, but for several reasons, being impulsive being a big one, don’t think she would serve us well as POTUS. MB needs to stay in the House or beat franken for the Senate, where her voice would be very beneficial.

Stop with the personal attacks. It’s not my fault that you are unable to debate your position. It only makes you look foolish.
