Bachmann's Vaccine Panic
gastongazette.com ^ | 9/18/2011 | Steve Chapman

Cancer treatment has made great progress in recent decades, but the tragedy is that so much of our effort to combat this scourge is just that: treatment. Once a disease appears, there is only so much that can be done. It would be far cheaper, more effective and less traumatic to prevent it.

A vaccine for cancer would be a triumph for public health. Did I say “would be”? Actually, it is. Such a vaccine exists for one of the biggest killers of women. But Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., is against it, and she’s not alone.

Two different vaccines block transmission of the human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes 70 percent of all cervical cancer in this country, as well as most anal cancers and some cancers of the throat, vagina and penis.

Each year, says the National Cancer Institute, more than 12,000 American women are diagnosed with cervical cancer alone, and some 4,000 will die of it. That’s not counting the genital warts HPV can cause.

It’s a nasty but very common bug that the world would be better off without. Universal inoculation would be a huge step toward eradicating it and the suffering it causes.

But there is a big impediment to its use: HPV is sexually transmitted, which makes the vaccine controversial — especially because to achieve maximum effectiveness, it has to be administered before the recipient becomes sexually active. And in this country, 6 percent of youngsters have sex by the age of 13.

Oh shut up. I’m sick and tired of being called a rino, liberal, not a conservative, blah, blah, blah because I don’t toe the line in supporting both Palin and now Bachmann.

Amen!

I’m not surprised - at all - that you are a woman. We have some really mean women here on FR. You are a prime example of one.

You stay classy Rick Perry supporters.

Exactly. I'm learning Saul Alinsky evidently, supports Evita Perry.

Rep Bachmann needs to drop this issue. Enough.

That needed to be said.

When is she going to prove what she said was the truth? She’s been given incentives to do so. $10,000 of them.

Her own former staffers say she’s got a problem with sticking to the facts.

Odd interpretation of facts.

The only posts I see, are Perry supporters attacking Bachmann. For a week now...

And I have discovered the REAL reason Rick Perry got involved in that Gardasil thing!

See THIS! Heads are going to explode!

This video is not for the faint of heart

The girl in that video even DIED shortly after this video was taken!

I’m fed up with it. I don’t know who decided that those two are the only true conservatives out there. They aren’t.

One’s not running and the other one can’t stop running off her mouth. They do not speak for me.

Right.

Saul Alinsky speaks for you, it would seem.

How about you Perrywinkles lay off Bachmann.

Go after Obama for a change, if you’re bored, and have nothing to do but complain.

Perry’s flying monkeys have all arrived at the scene. I guess church is over. I don’t feel like hanging around with them today. How many baths can one take in one day?

HUH? How is it that I’m mean because I don’t think either Palin or Bachmann are fit for the top job in the country? I base my opinion on their own words and work history.

My primary goal in 2012 is to ensure that the turd in the WH gets kicked out of office. Neither Palin or Bachmann are the ones to do that.

Do you not agree that Bachmann can sound as screechy as hitlery? And you want to hear THAT for 4 years???

Regarding your question “if she lied”, I don't think she lied about what some unknown person told her, the problem is that she IMPULSIVELY blabbed the “alleged” mental retardation on FNC as if it was proven science, not just something she heard. That impulsiveness would not be a good trait within the most powerful office in the world.

After the debate, she reported, she met a woman whose daughter developed mental retardation in reaction to the shot.

Bachmann has shown she has no business being President of the USA when she'll take an unsubstantiated statement and push it as the truth, or in other words, rumor monger. If she'll do that as shown in this case what would she do when someone whispered something in her ear about some country planning to do something to the USA without substantiation?

When Bachmann said, on stage at the debate, that the vaccine was dangerous

because some unnamed person told her that a child became retarded as a result

she did more to label herself as an "illogical, emotionally driven woman" than any "Perry-bot" could ever have dreamed of doing.
