It's a standard barrel, not NM. I haven't fired an M14 since 1979. I was looking for an FN-FAL, but the quality ones are too expensive, and the Century Arms FAL's just don't feel like a quality weapon.
The Mrs took a liking to the FN PS-90, and I can't blame her. It's a short lightweight weapon that fits her stature and is good for shooting the occassional Ja'Faa.
I'm going to have to start looking for accessories for the M1a next........just in case the zombies head in to my neck of the woods.

I have an FN FAL I will trade you, Its a century build and it is rock solid.

The last M14 I clapped hands on was a Chinese Norinco copy with questionable machine work.
That was 5 years ago and it was $950
I haven’t personally seen an M14 for sale since. Boy do they draw a premium
I’ve got a friend who is also a fellow Marine. He’s about 10 years older than me.
Believe it or not, he liked the M1 over the M14. He had a situation where he had to hit the ground. The darn stock on the M14 actually broke!
The mag sticking out looks cool but sucks in real life.
I could see your friend preferring the M1, although I think .308 is the way to go.
I think the old M1 En~clip is pretty cool, except for that bit about the bolt slamming on your thumb.

I got my CAI FAL for like $450 or $500 bucks several years ago.
I think they are in the $750 range now
I have heard of no QC issues with their FALS.
They have had plenty of QC issues with other firearms.
The CETME had lots of issues, but if you knew what to look for you could get a good CETME for $350 a few years back.
I ordered an HK93 clone from them and it had issues.
They replaced it with a good one.
I am happy.
