Cancer vaccine programme suspended after 4 girls Die(Gardasil)

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has told Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat to immediately suspend the cervical cancer control vaccination programme for girls. The programme is part of a two-year study to look into the utility of a vaccine in public health programmes and acceptability of Gardasil, the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine made by Merck. Gardasil, available in medical stores across the country, is marketed in India by MSD Pharmaceuticals Pvt Ltd.

The programme was marred by controversy after four deaths and complications among 120 girls were reported after vaccination. The girls complained of stomach disorders, epilepsy, headaches and early menarche. Women activists fear the vaccine may impact the mental health of girls who have shown no signs of distress so far.

Health ministry sources said the vaccination programme is being conducted by Gardasil, jointly with PATH, a Seattle-based NGO, ICMR and the two state governments. About 32,000 girls, aged 10-14, were to be tested in the study.

Bring it on, grasshopper.
You were already shown to be incorrect.

Let alone you don’t understand where statistics even apply.

You are a sad grasshopper of minimal knowledge.

About 15 of the up to 150 types of HPV
have been linked to cervical cancer.

Gardasil “protects” against the 4 Types that have the highest
correlation with cancer and genital warts.

Gardasil does not grant full immunity to those 4 Types of HPV.

Gardasil offers no protection against the other
strains of HPV that have been linked to cervical cancer.

Since you are clueless, further analysis of your gibberish is unwarranted.

You are calculating risk of Women by dividing the cancer cases per year, by the total population of women, including infants.

The total health risk then using that number, is the cases per year, divided by the total female population, times the average life span.

If you don’t want to include the years before normal onset of cancer first appears, don’t include that age group when you divide the deaths by population.

Hey dipstick, I am on your side of the argument and sorry to have you on my side. A pity your comprehension level is lower than most. Gardasil protects against 2 strains of HPV that cause cervical cancer and death. These 2 strains are responsible for about 70% of cervical cancer deaths or approximately 2800 deaths per year. Warts are irrelevant to the argument.

You do have the wherewithall to understand that dividing a smaller number by a constant, in this case about 150 million, lowers the percentage, don't you? IOW,s just for you, the death rate possibly preventable by Gardasil is 30% lower than you thought.

The man in the street is his best first responder. He has to live in his own skin.

There is risk to everything. The man in the street MUST retain the right to control what goes in to his body and what doesn’t. What optional medical care he gets and what optional medical care he doesn’t. Because as you say, when there is doubt or controversy over optional medical treatments, the man in the street - Joe Citizen, Joe the Plumber - needs to say, “You know what? I am not going to take this until I am satisfied that one side is correct.” Or “I am going to wait to take it until more data comes in.”

If you can’t make an informed decision, the man in the street must be allowed to say “NO”. And assumed to say no unless he explicitly says yes, because this is the position that respects the individual more than assuming they say yes and it’s up to them to say no. Especially when you don’t have enough info to make an informed decision.

Optional medical care is jsut that. It isn’t required immediately or you’ll die otherwise. going from 5 to 26 required vaccines in 30 years at earlier and earlier ages is nuts for things that the body can fight off. They even try to foist a chicken pox vaccine on people now. Chicken pox is a nuisance but is hardly ever deadly. More kids statistically will be harmed by the vaccine than the actual disease.

And I’ll throw your quesiton back at you. Haven’t you ever heard of pharma companies ever rigging test results, getting rid of scientists who wouldn’t cover up bad trials, ignoring studies showing high damage and death rates , to get a drug product out, or a vaccine out? Merck knew about SV-40 contamination in their polio vaccines and did nothing about it. Said it was all safe. It wasn’t.

He was talking about WHO numbers world-wide, not US numbers.

And ... he was using world-wide numbers to cheer lead for Perry's nanny-statism re Gardasil in the US, which has a much lower incidence of cervical cancer and much lower death rate from cervical cancer than is found world wide.

Secret Agent Man:
Extremely cogent post.

Just take a look at the so called 'science' and waiving of FDA regulations that was used to replace asthma inhalers using CFC propellants with ones using HFA propellants (at best an inferior product, but politically correct and very profitable).

Typically the way the “man in the street” makes up his mind is by picking one media source’s version of reality and acting on that. Maybe one in ten thousand actually read a research report or have the ability to determine whether a media report is accurate or even makes sense. Look at the immense popularity of the environmental movement even yet.

Given the legal environment no drug company is going to put out a drug which it knows is a killer. Have they also developed an Anti-Predatory Lawyer immunization?

American drug companies provide the world with 78-80% of the new drugs which come to market.

The “man in the street” would have rejected smallpox vaccinations, polio vaccinations and virtually every other medical advance. Unfortunately, he is a scientific know nothing.

Interesting that you mention chickenpox. I happen to know a gorgeous young woman who died from it while pregnant.

Human knowledge grows and creates the means to immunize against more and more things.

Your Horror scenario can happen but the Fugitive is not reality. Nor is there any evidence that such a story is applicable to this drug.

I’ll take the science of American drug companies over that of almost any group with an axe to grind about something every day of the week.

Most men in the street believe CFC destroys ozone and that Greenhouse gases will boil us within a decade. They get virtually all of their presumed knowledge from the sources we hate. Almost none could examine data and make any sense of it.

Don’t ever run for office. We have enough tyrants who are condescending bastards thinking they know how to live our lives better than we do. Who will force people to assume risks because THEY aren’t the ones who are going to be the ones affected if they have a problem with a drug or vaccine.

Your line of thinking is what forces something like Obamacare on people. I guess we just don’t know that it’s really good for us, we’re just that stupid.

Don’t bother posting to me again, I don’t have time to waste on people who believe we can use government to force people to take drugs they don’t want and vaccines they don’t want because they’re too stupid to make their own choices. If you claim it’s because they can’t get good information, blame the people who aren’t giving them good information, don’t blame the people by taking away their right to say no.

I note that in your your patronizing post, you never addressed (nor probably examined) the 'science' big pharma and the FDA used to replace CFC propellants with HFA propellants which are at best an inferior product, but politically correct and very profitable.

I'm surprised you didn't quote the FDA's advice to patients with lung disease on using albuterol, a medication used for emergency relief:
"It is important to remember that it is the deep breath that you take with each puff that gets the medication into your lungs, not the force of the spray."

If it weren't a matter of life and breath, one would consider this advice a sick joke.

I doubt there is much difference in the propellants which I actually did address by pointing out that the change came about because “the man in the street” had been propagandized about CFC alleged dangers.

One can hardly tell patients too much and it can hardly be too simple when dealing with scientific ignoramuses.

You can join the Know Nothings if you like but don’t pretend there is any scientific knowledge in the Man in the street.

What passes for conventional wisdom is almost always wrong. Try and have a conversation on any serious subject with the Man in the Street. After about a minute his dog sounds more knowledgeable. How many have read a non-fiction book in the last year? Or ever? Not one in a thousand has read a book on a scientific topic since college.

How many have read Dickens, Shakespeare, Sophocles or Plato unless forced to? How many have ANY understanding of Western Civilization? Look at the way they have voted for the last 70 yrs.

I doubt there is much difference in the propellants which ..

Right there you join those scientific ignoramuses and Know Nothings that you look down upon.

If you bothered to do the research, you'd discover that there is a major change in the propellants, inactive ingredients, impurities, extractables, and leachables. That ought to be simple enough for you to understand.

...I actually did address by pointing out that the change came about because “the man in the street” had been propagandized about CFC alleged dangers ...

The man in the street had nothing to do with initiating the change.

“If you bothered to do the research, you’d discover that there is a major change in the propellants, inactive ingredients, impurities, extractables, and leachables.”

According to whom?

Unless industry decides to do it itself these changes are not initiated until the Man in the Street has been thoroughly propagandized. Environmentalism has done its work.
