For the fifth year in a row, crime is down in the United States, according to the FBI. The 2010 final statistics released today show a 6.0% drop in violent crimes from last year's report -- better than the 5.5% announced in the preliminary findings in May.
Violent crime is down 13.2% from 2006 and 13.4% from 2001.
But parts of the country are getting worse.
Flint, Michigan -- the most violent city in America -- saw a 10% increase in violent crime over last year, with 2,208 violent crimes per 100,000 people. Rust Belt neighbor Detroit was only slightly safer.
The cities on this list are ranked by violent crimes, including murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault, per 100,000 people.

Uuugh, I hope that's a dark fantasy, and not a happy one. Relocate the violent ones, relocate the violence. I prefer them to concentrate. Makes it easier to reduce the risk of confrontation.
And every one of them is run by Republicans. /sarcasm alert

No. As someone who pretty much grew up in the South, but spent 18 mos. in Texarkana, Little Rock is NOT the South as the South knows itself to be. More a mix of country and southwest, with a hint of midwest. Definitely NOT Southern..
So Flint is #1? I bet there is a lot of high fivin’ and spiking the football. It’s good to be #1!
I can’t believe Camden wasn’t on the list. At least West Camden (aka Philadelphia) made it, though.
Note to self: Continue to stay far away from any concentrated Democrat parasite nest (”city”).
I can't see how that's true. The recent violence of the union thugs and big labor goons there seemed real enough to me. They've got a vicegrip on Madison as do the radical liberals at the state-run university in town. Wanton violence has been the preferred tool of leftists since Karl Marx.
Same with San Jose CA.
That city is over 35% Mexican. If it's anything like here in Texas, it can't be very safe given that demographic makeup. Our most dangerous places are El Paso (80% Mexican) and the Rio Grande Valley (around 90% Mexican). I wonder if San Jose isn't cooking the numbers to minimize the extent of the real danger there?
RE: It’s a shame. Downtown Buffalo is nicer than it’s been in my lifetime, but the rest of the city is crumbling to dust around it.
I’ve always read Amherst, NY, a suburb of Buffalo, is one of the best places to live in in America ( and one of the safest too).
The Amherst Town Supervisor, Barry Weinstein, is a Republican.
To my way of thinking, concentration has something to do with it.
And if the cities were cleared out, the Electoral College results might be improved!
El Paso has one of the lowest murder rates in the country. Its black population is <3%.
See for yourself:
It's easier to shoot them if they're not in Philadelphia, too!
RE: I did not see any of our Texas cities on the list. Wonder why?
Now don’tcha tell me you feel insulted :)
El Paso has one of the lowest murder rates in the country. Its black population is <3%.
Well, sir, I stand corrected. Presuming the numbers are accurate at City-Data, both San Jose and El Paso do show a crime index lower than the national average of 319.2.
That does surprise me since I do feel somewhat unsafe in San Jose and extremely threatened in places like El Paso and the Rio Grande Valley. Thank goodness for CCW here in Texas or I'd steer clear of those places (and San Antonio, too).
The numbers for Madison were even more shocking. My perception was that the extreme liberalism there would create an ideal environment for the criminal class to flourish. Austin, Texas is also controlled by leftists and has a liberal university in the city. Its crime rate is above the national average which does square with my expectations.
RE: New Haven, CT, a whole town full of Jail graduates.
Isn’t that where the prestigious Ivy League, Yale University is? Alma Mater of the Clintons and the Bushes?
I've lived in three of the cities in the top 11, but fortunately don't live in any of the cities on the list now. There may be a cut-off for population that causes places like East Saint Louis to be omitted.
Too many guns in law abiding citizens hands plus
we put murderers to death.
Rahm probably paid good (taxpayer) money to keep Chi-Town off the list..
