A defense lawyer says a police officer has been charged with murder in the death of a mentally ill homeless man in Southern California.

Attorney John Barnett says his client, Fullerton police Officer Manuel Ramos, surrendered to authorities Wednesday and was being charged with second-degree murder.

The Orange County district attorney's office was set to announce the charge in the death of 37-year-old Kelly Thomas after a violent confrontation on July 5 with Fullerton officers.

Six officers were placed on paid administrative leave after the incident that occurred while police were investigating reported vehicle break-ins at a transit hub.

Thomas suffered severe head and neck injuries and was taken off life support five days later.

Officer Manuel Ramos orders Kelly Thomas “Put your hands on your f’ing knees” He then made two fists and put them front of Kelly Thomas face, and told Kelly Thomas “See these two fists? They are getting ready to f you up!”

Is M2 the Santa Ana police department's farm league now?

-- The only reason something is happening, is due to video and lots of witnesses. --

Another essential component is publicity, "daylight."

One of these officers, calmly put on a pair of gloves, then proceeded to help beat this unarmed guy to death..

How I wish I was on that jury. It’s about time these murderers behind a badge get prosecuted and convicted.

Like KFI Los Angeles, John and Ken program...They were actually threatened by the “Regardless of circumstances, cops do no wrong” crowd.

I totally agree. I’m so disgusted by cops around the country that are arresting or suing over video taping by citizens. In my opinion we have every right to record our interaction with LEOs.

Dear me... I had to really look to see if the picture was human. Prayers for the family of this man. Hopefully, they can use THIS PHOTO in court to show the depravity.

Considering the level of brutality, Officer Manuel Ramos is likely a violent mental case, or simply a white hating racist.

This guy was simply gang beat...to death.

Bastards like this are worse than common cirminals who do the same thing.

Common criminals do their damage outside the law. These bastards have the full force and authority of the state behind them with their actions.

The bastards should be hung by the neck until dead - all of them.

Once again we witness the REAL danger of living in a quasi-police state.

The Founders of this Republic put their trust in citizen militias, sheriff’s and deputies for a very bvery good reason. They had personal experience of what an unrestrained constabulary was capable of.

We need civilian police review boards to police the actions of the police, with the full authority to call for indictments against scum like this.

How despicable of these goons in blue.

Why did they beat this unarmed white guy so brutally? What was the real motive?

The other cop indicted is white, so the race card doesn't hold up. The scuttlebutt is that the local bar and restaurant owners didn't like the homeless hanging around the downtown area and the cops were directed to roust them out of there.

What's telling is that the police have so far refused to release the 911 call about the alleged break-ins at the parking lot--break-ins, by the way, that don't show up in the police crime logs for that day. There's a good chance that there was never any such call.

If he does that, there will be no conviction. Not sure about he pension, but the convictions of Ken Lay in the ENRON cases were vacated because he died prior the exhaustion of his appeals.

Lucky for his wife; a least financially.

Having watched the trial of the 4 officers accused of beating Rodney King, I was discussing the case with a friend who happened to be a retired captain with LAPD.

I thought the 4 cops were not guilty and the verdict in the criminal trial was correct. He disagreed and said he would have "burned them all including their watch commander".

Sometimes the cops themselves are hardest on colleagues who betray their trust.

His color was irrelevant.

No human being should be treated like this.

CERTAINLY not by goons who are paid by the public, protected by the public and granted benefits by the public.

I hope all of them wind up in a prison where street justice is swiftly administered. Its better than they will get in a Court of Law.

Is either of these cops who were charged the one-eyed guy?

The 2nd cop, Cincinella(sp)lost an eye while a probation officer and, according to the story, got shot three weeks after graduating from the academy. I wonder if those incidents screwed him up, and made him unfit for police work.

The father of this poor man has to live with the knowledge that his son was crying out for his Dad while these cops were beating him to death. The anger pushes me past words...
