Troy Davis execution delayed while supreme court considers stay
The Guardian ^ | Sept. 19, 2011 | Ed Pinkinton

The execution of Troy Davis was delayed temporarily by the US supreme court on Wednesday night in a dramatic intervention just as he was due to be put to death by lethal injection.

The last-minute decision caused confusion outside the prison in Jackson, Georgia, where family, supporters and civil rights campaigners broke into celebration as they believed the court had granted Davis a stay of execution.

But it quickly emerged that the delay was only temporary, while the justices considered whether to issue a stay.

Until that moment it seemed almost certain that Davis would be executed, as the Georgia supreme court had rejected a last-ditch appeal by Davis's lawyers over the 1989 murder of off-duty policeman Mark MacPhail, for which Davis had been sentenced to death despite overwhelming evidence that the conviction is unreliable.

A Butts County superior court judge had also declined to stop the execution.

You have to admire the circular reasoning in item 10. His legal team has been able to get so many last minute postponements that executing him now amounts to cruel and unusual punishment.

Two things going on: (1) The American Appellate Judiciary intuitively favors those who inflict harm on our society;(2) American society , in general, has difficulty excreting its refuse.

What is a Kardashian?

Kim is the bimbo daughter of the now deceased shyster crook OJ lawyer Robert who helped hide evidence.

I am 100. % for the death penalty.....I also researched this case to certain degree and I think the SCOTUS will stay this execution.....there are elements of this case that trouble me....I would rather err and wait than see a man put to death

I’ll bet there are freepers reading this who feel that Byrd’s killers were more deserving of the death penalty than McPhail’s.

Agree. The levels of courts are in a place for a reason, let our Constitution do its job.

You might find this of interest what meet the New Boss posted regarding the basis of the Judge’s detailed explanation on why he did NOT stay the execution based on his thorough review of the entire case.

"I would rather err and wait"

It's been over twenty years. People in this country given the death penalty used to be executed within months of their sentence. How much longer do you think is needed?

Normally I'm try’em and fry’em kind of guy.....but this as I have examined it has some troubling aspects to it

I'd rather wait and make sure before we make this guy some sort of political martyr for the left to use

While the Supreme Court considers the stay, I wonder if he has enough time to become born again and write a Tookie Williams type children’s book as his next justification for keeping the executioner at bay.

Read Ann Coulter’s column and that should remove any doubts.
