A Fort Worth high school student was sent to the principals office earlier this week for telling another classmate he believes homosexuality is wrong.
Fourteen-year-old Dakota Ary spent most of the day Tuesday serving an in-school suspension. It was punishment for discussion in his German class at Fort Worths Western Hills High School.
We were talking about religions in Germany. I said, Im a Christian. I think being a homosexual is wrong, he said. It wasnt directed to anyone except my friend who was sitting behind me. I guess [the teacher] heard me. He started yelling. He told me he was going to write me an infraction and send me to the office.
An assistant principal called Arys mother at work to let her know he was in trouble.
At first I was in disbelief. My son is on the honor roll with great grades. I dont have any problems out of him, Holly Pope said.
After hearing Arys explanation of what happened, the assistant principal reduced the original suspension from two days to one. But Pope was not satisfied with that.
He was stating an opinion. He has a right to do that. They punished him for it, she said.
Attorney Matt Krause joined Ary and his mom at a Wednesday morning meeting with the principal. They asked for the blemish to be taken off his record and reassurance there would be no retaliation.
Students dont lose their first amendment rights just because they go in the schoolhouse door, Krause said.
District spokesman Clint Bond said the Fort Worth Independent School District does not comment on specific employee or student-related issues.
We are following district policy in our review of the circumstances and any resolution will likewise be in accordance with district policy, Bond said.
If Ary continues taking German hell have to learn from the same teacher who punished him. His mom is relying on faith that things will work out.
I want to believe the school will make the right decision. Thats something the school will need to handle, she said.
Actually, there was a backlash which culminated in the presidential election of 1972, widely seen at the time as a repudiation of the '60's counterculture. However, the radicals wormed their way into the schools, the judiciary, and other institutions where the public couldn't vote them out.

The teacher had a picture of 2 men kissing on the wall in his German class.

If that is true, then I suspect teacher is teaching in a high school with the intention of recruiting.
Best to wear some leather gloves over Latex... that teacher sounds like a butt pirate.

The teacher and the principal both should be tarred and featthered and run out of town.
It started "blooming" much earlier. By 1975 it was unstoppable.
There should have been a fierce backlash back then but there wasn't except for a few isolated efforts, and Lord how they were mocked by the media.
I'm reminded of Anita Bryant. The queers and media destroyed her.
Yes, this is nothing more then persecution.
I've seen it spelled your way seven times in the last two days on FR News.
I know, I know Flame On.
I am not the spelling police. I saw it spelled twice this way in the same post.
This is not from me but from my HS english teacher, Dr. Louella Parsons. She is a ghost and will not go away.
I happy to see all of them. You are right. You did point us to a more elaborate thread on the same story. Thanks for that.
My 10th Grade English teacher would have gone nuts over this.
To the extent that teachers think, they think they have to go with the culture. This teacher forgot that in Texas, the culture is not attuned with what appears in NEA Today.
The teacher is a liberal and the principal is a politician. Notice when the mother came in, he switched 180. School administration is a form of appointive politics. In large systems they are mid-level managers who jump when their bosses say jump. The mother probably is someone with enough standing to make trouble for him, so he sought a way to keep his job. But I doubt the teacher will lose his job, as he might in an earlier day. Only when they are foolish enough to step over the line as this guy was do they not get in trouble. America, even Texas, has bought the myths of Will and Grace.
His grades aren’t going to suffer for it because his lawyer is monitoring the situation. No teacher wants to be involved in a legal case. I’m sure the principal has informed the staff that they better leave this kid alone.
The situation is being monitored by the law firm his mother contacted just for that reason. No one is going to give him a bad grade. If they do, they will wind up in court, as well as the school.
The German teacher at Western Hills High School who yelled at Ary and sent him to the office for punishment is Kristopher Franks.
His email address is kristopher.franks@fwisd.org
The Principal is james.wellman@fwisd.org
If you contact them to express your concern about how Ary was treated, please remember to be civil, reasonable and decent.
Thanks.
