Mullen: Pakistani spy agency assisting terrorists--Afghanistan bomb struck U.S. troops
The Washington Times ^ | September 22, 2011 | Ashish Kumar Sen

Pakistan’s intelligence agency helped terrorists plan and conduct an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, last week, Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Thursday.

The comments marked the first time a senior U.S. official has publicly linked Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency to an attack on U.S. interests in Afghanistan.

Testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee, Adm. Mullen said the ISI also helped the Haqqani Network, a Pakistan-based terrorist group, plan a truck-bomb attack near a NATO military base on Sept. 10. Four Afghans were killed and 77 U.S. troops injured in the attack in Wardak province, 30 miles south of Kabul.

“With ISI support, Haqqani operatives planned and conducted that truck-bomb attack, as well as the assault on our embassy,” Adm. Mullen said.

He added that the United States also has “credible intelligence” that the ISI also was behind a June 28 attack on the InterContinental Hotel in the Afghan capital, Kabul, as well as smaller attacks.

The Haqqani Network, led by the father-son duo Jalaluddin and Sirajuddin Haqqani, operates from safe havens in Pakistan’s North Waziristan region, which abuts Afghanistan. The Haqqanis allow al Qaeda and the Taliban to use its safe havens in Pakistan.

“The Haqqani Network … acts as a veritable arm” of Pakistan’s ISI, Adm. Mullen said.

Other U.S. and Western officials frequently cite close ties between the ISI and the Haqqani Network.

“The fact remains that the Quetta Shura [the Pakistani Taliban] and the Haqqani Network operate from Pakistan with impunity. Extremist organizations serving as proxies of the government of Pakistan are attacking Afghan troops and civilians as well as U.S. soldiers,” Adm. Mullen said in written testimony to the committee.

This is actually quite a new departure.

Nobody so senior has put what we all know so bluntly or so specifically. Policy change ? DOD is off the reservation ?

Agreed. I was skeptical of the title until I read the article carefully and coming from Adm Mullen is astonishing, IMO.

This agency has been playing us for the last 3 years. They cost us many good operators and assets. I truly hate them with all my being. I would love to run an operation that was designed to take out the guys at the top. They meet with us in the day and F ck us in the night.

Correct. The ISI is not on our side and hasn’t been.

Don’t get your hopes up. This STATEMENT in testimony IS the US response. The Pakistani military correctly assesses out President and senior military leaders as pussies. This week Mullins and Obamas big deal was to have homos celebrating.

Our soldiers are incredible,, senior leaders, not so much.

Another DUH from the government bureaucrats that do not have a firm grasp or perception of the obvious.

From an old retired Master Chief Gunner's Mate to ADM Mullen: You think the Pakistani ISI isn't our friend? Isn't that why we never told the Pakistanis when we took out OBL at his safe house near the Paki equivalent of West Point?

Admiral, you've gotta get some better writers for your press releases.

the ISI has been playing the US since the 80s. The Pakis as a whole have been doing that.

I agree, 30 years or more but we knew that and understood that they were playing both sides. In the last three years we have trusted them to the point of throwing a birthday party for a terrorist asset who was returning from their country who was allowed to enter our Afgan base and kill some of our best people.
