Viacom employees have been hit with a round of layoffs, Adweek has learned. Pink slips were handed down Thursday afternoon. A Viacom spokesperson confirmed the cuts, and said that the downsizing primarily took place within the media conglomerate’s music group, which includes MTV, VH1, CMT, and Logo.
A number of departments within the music group were affected, including digital, consumer marketing, and on-air promotions. Outside of the music group, cuts were made in affiliate marketing, an area that supports BET Networks and Viacom Media Networks, which counts Comedy Central and Nickelodeon among its holdings.
The downsizing took place the same day Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman told financial analysts at a Goldman Sachs conference that Viacom's advertising revenue growth this quarter is expected to miss the company's double-digit targets. Following that announcement, Viacom stock dropped about 8 percent.
In a statement provided to Adweek, a Viacom spokesperson said, “Our individual brands and business units regularly adjust resources to address their evolving strategies and needs, and they will continue to do so.”

About the only places I would rather see layoffs are at the DNC and the ACLU.
If we could only get cable to bill by channel as opposed to groups, we’d get that garbage off the air in a couple of years.

Maybe when the 99 weeks of their unemployment is approaching and the only “job” they can find is writing for free on billionaire Ariana’s blog, maybe, just maybe they will finally grasp what the term “Useful idiot” really means

Calls on House and Senate to block the new rules

With the FCC’s network neutrality rules going into effect Nov. 20, rules critic Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) called on the House and Senate to act on legislative efforts to block the rules, taking aim at the rules in a statement as an “Internet Iron Curtain” and a “Job-killer.”
“Net neutrality is a net loser,” said Blackburn. “These regulations were approved last December and the FCC has been slow-walking them to avoid the lawsuits that are certain to be filed. It is just another example of a federal agency defying the will of the people. This is just more bureaucratic overregulation that will discourage innovation, hurt competition, and serve as a job-killer for the industry. The FCC is in essence building an Internet Iron Curtain that will restrict more of our freedom. For these reasons and more, the Senate should act immediately on the resolution of disapproval and the House needs to bring up and pass my Internet Freedom Act so we can start to hold the FCC accountable.”
Blackburn’s bill would basically cancel out the new rules, saying that “the Federal Communications Commission shall not propose, promulgate, or issue any regulations regarding the Internet or IP-enabled services.”
The Senate has yet to act on a House-passed resolution nullifying the rule change.

I haven't had cable tv or a tv for that matter for about 5 years now. I do have high speed net access and that's all I need. I view or read or listen to what I want, when I want, where I want -have a notebook pc in my bathroom with the stack of Northerntool catalogs and Handyman mags
That is exactly right. Now we have to pay for garbage in order to get a limited number of good channels. I have spoken to the local cable order, who is a friend, and he indicates that it is the providers who force him into offering packages. He can't get the desired channels without also buying the crap.
In the long run perhaps the result will be the same, with marginal channels sinking, but the option to pick and choose would accelerate the process considerably.
The other day I had to get a set of tires on my old ‘02 Dodge Ram and was sitting in the waiting room while they put them on. There were about 8 or 9 other folks also waiting.
Big stack of magazines and newspapers - car magazines, hunting magazines, sports, Wall street Journal, etc.
Five of the people were fiddling with their smart phones - talking, texting, surfing the net.
It’s all about eyeballs. The advertising money follows the eyeballs.
The iPad is great for the bathroom. The only thing you can't do with it is wipe, unlike the magazines....

We’re going to try the Roku streaming box. If it works as well as advertised we’ll be able to cancel DirecTv altogether. I have my fingers and toes crossed.
Just shut those channels down and help increase the national IQ a few points.
American citizens losing their jobs is not a political event, conservative principle, or an example of government corruption and abuse. It’s a trajic life altering event for people who are doing what they can to support themselves and their families.
These employees earn their livings and pay their taxes like true Americans should. Would you rather they go on unemployment and join the ever growing population of workers who can’t find jobs?
You should not revel in their misfortune, that’s not what JC would do.
I am referring to some of the sleaziest channels on the cable system.
Maybe they should stop supporting those who are harming the economy.
