Rick Perry gets big welcome from Florida conservatives

ORLANDO, Fla. -- After putting in a disappointing debate performance the night before, Texas Gov. Rick Perry could take comfort on Friday in the ecstatic reception he got from a large crowd of conservatives meeting here to take a gander at the presidential field.

"As conservatives, we know that values and vision matter. It's not who's the slickest candidate or the smoothest debater that we need to elect," he told 500 attendees at the Conservative Political Action Conference. "Remember President Clinton? Man, he could sell ice cubes to Eskimos and the next day be against ice cubes."

The remark was a dig at Romney, who struggled with a reputation as flip-flopper on issues during his 2008 presidential campaign. And it also served Perry's purpose of portraying himself as the regular Joe in the campaign, in contrast to the "slickest" candidate, Romney.

Romney, who spoke before Perry at the event, received a warm welcome. But the crowd stood and cheered as soon as Perry took the stage at the Orange County Convention Center. The Texas governor accentuated his usual anti-Washington stump speech with references to former President Ronald Reagan, a conservative icon. "We need to push through to that shining city on the hill," Perry said. "As President Reagan said, we need bold colors, not pale pastels."

He also opened a new line of attack against President Obama, blasting him for proposing to charge retired military veterans $200 a year to stay on the Tricare-for-Life that supplements Medicare coverage. "Our veterans have already sacrificed enough for this country," Perry said. "Leave them alone."

As President Reagan said..

I am curious as to when he became a Reagan supporter. He opposed him all thru the 80's. I would like to know more about when he saw the light.

Perry's Florida CPAC speech was GREAT -- he starts out slow, winds up and then hits it out of the park!

Also, if anyone hasn't seen Perry's new ad it's HERE (over 445,000 views)

This is a nice thread to compensate for Perry's
failing, tragic, loss of his momentum last night.

Even as Democrat, Perry voted twice for Reagan, aide says Gov. Rick Perry was a Democrat until the late 1980s, but he voted for Ronald Reagan in the 1980 and 1984 presidential elections, a top aide said today.

Perry spokesman Ray Sullivan told MSNBC’s Chuck Todd that Perry voted for Reagan in each of those elections, even when Perry himself was on the ballot as a Democratic candidate for state representative in 1984.

Perry has come under fire from U.S. Rep. Ron Paul — his fellow GOP presidential candidate — for supporting Democrat Al Gore for president in 1988. Texas was a much more Democratic state back then, and Perry has said he viewed Gore at the time as a conservative Democrat.

Last month in South Carolina, an unidentified voter in South Carolina who confronted Perry over his Democratic past told CNN that Perry acknowledged supporting Democratic President Jimmy Carter in 1980. The network does not appear to have witnessed that conversation.

Perry has acknowledged supporting Carter in 1976, with the hope that he would be good for farmers. [end]

I had supported Perry for the past few weeks (in Palin’s absence). But when he said conservatives have “no heart” because we oppose in-state tuition for illegals - he lost me. Forever.

The problem is not Gore.

It is that Perry supported criminal illegals
last night, again.

Like the reason why PerryCARE is wrong, Rick Perry
does not seem to “get it”.

“Perry’s Florida CPAC speech was GREAT — he starts out slow, winds up and then hits it out of the park!”

Unfortunately it was a Little League park (200 feet to straightaway center).

Perry at CPAC: a RINO addressing RINOs - how very appropriate.

Well... Perry was and Air Force pilot... and was prolly taught how to recover from a flat spin.

Which is good, because he’s in one now.

His support is dropping faster than college girl panties at a spring break pool party.

He’s heading straight down at mach 2 and if he doesn’t pull up REAL FAST he’s gonna make a big azz hole in the ground.

I doubt he’s going to able to eject from this one.

I loved the ad. I’m not sold on Perry but unlike Mitt Romney I would vote for him.

CBS likes him. Great. A modern day open borders LBJ. Perry has been a Democrat most of his life and supported Gore. Perry actually makes Romney look good.

Santorum is so much better.
