Editorial: Memo To GOP: The Foe Is Obama, Not Perry (Excellent Point!!!)
IBD Editorials ^ | September 23, 2011 | Staff

Politics: Despite the "gotcha" sniping at Thursday's debate, Republicans need to keep their eyes on the prize. The target for 2012 is not Santorum, Cain, Bachmann, Romney or Perry. It's the current White House occupant.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry must have felt a bit like Gen. Custer at Little Big Horn at the Orlando debate, a made-for-TV contrivance in which those who have a real chance to be president must take pokes and jabs from those who don't.

We appreciate this may be a necessary evil in which front-runners without stamina — the Ed Muskies and Rudy Giulianis, for example — are weeded out.

Still, we must understand that while the goal is the nomination, the prize is the White House. Lost in the brouhaha over tuition for illegal aliens and mandated vaccines is the fact we simply can't afford four more years of President Obama.

Perry has given awkward responses. How can he debate the president, the whispers ask. Sound-bite debates in which you thrust and parry (no pun intended) with eight other candidates, as well as the pundits, are one thing. Comparing your job-creating pro-growth record in a booming state to the record of the arguably worst president in American history is something else.

Those former and nongovernors without a 1,200-mile border with Mexico may criticize, and perhaps justifiably, Perry's embrace of a college tuition break for illegal aliens. We've opposed it too in the past.

I don’t think this meme being floated that Perry’s problem was nothing more that being caught in “gotcha” questions in a “contrived” format and therefore he wasn’t as smooth as he needed to be is going to fly.

I think conservatives are unhappy with the substance of what Perry was saying, in particular on illegal immigration.

So, all the other primary candidates should just sit back and give the nomination to Perry? Now is the time to make sure Republicans pick the proper candidate who is battle tested. Once that candidate is nominated, then they can worry about defeating Obama.

Another performance like last night and this could all be a moot point. There might be some changes on the leader board coming soon.

Here is the updated Vid from yesterday on the border wars.

Monday there is a report coming out. Hope it makes it clear to Americans just how bad this situation really is, and it’s not kids going to school.

Don't show this to all the Perry haters that have suddenly taken over the board here.

half of them are probably liberals trying to foment decent in our ranks.

a quarter are deranged Palin supporters that really believe she is going to run, and will keep saying she is even after the primaries, heck they might even be screaming for a floor flight at the convention.

the other quarter are retarded Ron Paul supporters who seem to have some sort of anti social disorder which causes them to ruin everything they touch with their outrageous behavior. I can't imagine what they actually see in that geeky little nut that would get us all killed if given the chance, but to each their own I guess. But I would prefer if they went back to their one world conspiracy boards where you have to be wearing tin on your head to log in than bothering us here on FR.

I wonder if the public picks up on the fact that Bachman, Santorum, and Romney are blowing smoke when they talk about a 1200-mile fence keeping Mexicans out of Texas. Perry is right about it not working: you can always dig under, punch through, or climb over a fence. What is needed are UAVs and enough troops to respond to incursions.

Candidates, in ALL primaries, "snipe" at the others/the front runner/s.

G.H.W.Bush called Reagan's economic plan: "VOODOO ECONOMICS",for but one example.

And this has been the way it has ALWAYS been, from the inception of this nation. As a matter of fact, the broadsides and newspaper articles ( many written anonymously and many others PAID FOR, by one candidate or another using a hack hatchetman ), not to mention the vicious whispering campaigns, were not just about policies/views, but very personal swipes as well.

Thus far, not a single GOPer has gone after Newt and his abject moral failings, Romney and Huntsman's Mormonism, the gossip that once engulfed Santorum, when he was a Senator, etc.! So it's really been a pretty "clean" case of "sniping" which is a relatively bad use of the term "snipe", anyway.

The incumbent President has an advantage—he doesn’t have to agree to a debate with the challenger unless he wants to. Nixon never debated McGovern. It may be harder now to avoid a debate but the media will cover for Obama (just as they didn’t raise a fuss in 2008 when he decided not to go the public funding route). Would Obama be able to use teleprompters in a debate, if he did agree to one?

Nancy boy thinking like this make me wince. Are we going to have a legit competition amongst candidates for the nomination or a rose-petal path to coronation for the front-runner?

What this editorial misses is that the GOP establishment desperately wants Romney to be the nominee. So much so that they appear to have convinced all the other candidates to clear the path for him.

Perry was his only credible conservative challenger, and now that they have destroyed him, who is possibly going to stop Mitt? My guess is no one.

How depressing.

It’s not either/or - we need both of those things you are talking about(fence plus personnel/air), plus other things in addition to that in order to accomplish control over the border.

I was shocked at Perry’s lame performance last night. I now have eliminated him, MB, RP, and Huntsman. I’m having a difficult time coming to grips with the choices we have at this point.

Yeah, dig under a river side fence. Smart.

I love the logic that says, “we don’t need a fence, we can catch them trying to cross,” but then argues, “besides, it won’t work, because we’d never be able to catch them constructing a tunnel system to go under a riverside fence.”

I see Romney's still on your possible list then.

I am guessing you don't know Romney is:

Pro abortion
Pro taking your guns
Pro gay marriage
Pro state overseen healthcare
Pro higher taxes

oh! and did I mention he's a freaking cultist mormon?

Heck Romney actually makes John McLame look conservative by comparison! Of course as soon as Romney started considering a run for the oval office, he flip flopped on each and every issue to try and fool the masses with his fast used car salesman debate performance. Guess he found another sucker.
