Why Federal Government Trumps the States
US News & World Report ^ | September 23, 2011 | Rick Newman, Chief Business Correspondent

It sounds quaint. But giving Washington less control over our affairs, and the states more control, is a bad idea.

Here's why: People move.

Anybody who has relocated from one state to another knows there's a huge hassle factor associated with simply adapting to a different set of rules.

There's also the dubious proposition that states manage their business better than the federal government. It's true that nearly all states are required to balance their budgets, which creates a degree of spending discipline. But that's hardly the same thing as responsible government.

It's worth keeping in mind that the national press corps is centered in Washington and New York, and for all its flaws, there are still hundreds of dogged journalists eager to ferret out wrongdoing and pounce on scandalous behavior.

In state capitals, by contrast, there's far less oversight and a thin press corps that can't possibly keep tabs on every shady deal.

Yeah, there are a lot of problems with the federal government. But 50 different sets of rules isn't one of them.

He admits the press is lazy. It’s so much easier to focus their attention on Washington rather than the 50 state capitals. Tragically there also too lazy to keep their eyes on 535 Senators and Congressmen so the President becomes the only game in town.

Great find.

He forgot about:

People have a right to Choose.

Governments hate competition, but it’s a benefit for their citizens. Citizens of New York can leave for Florida or Texas if they decide they are being over-taxed. Only when one state usurps the rights of another’s residents should a federal solution be favored. An example might be pollution from one state flowing into another.

I read half way through and then remembered why I always take a book to the doctor or dentist office so that I don’t have to read such garbage as U.S. News & World Report. Tell me, do the libs send their magazines out free to such offices?

Herein lies proof positive of your assertion that the author is, as you succinctly stated, a moron. He is a moron on one of two counts, or even possibly both.

If *he* believes that statement, then he is, in fact, a moron. That only holds true if the wrongdoer is not a Democrat.

If he believes that *we* believe the above, then he is equally a moron. We've seen the blatant double standard, and "end justifies the means" mentality for far too long to fail to recognize it when it is, once again, so rudely shoved into our face.

If he believes *BOTH*, then what can I say, he's removed any possible doubt as to his moronhood...

[Art.] “...and a thin press corps that can't possibly keep tabs on every shady deal.”

and that is the main point, the essence of favoring central control of government and rule by federal bureaucracies.

Yeah. And then they go ignore the borders, and some of the States get their bills filled, at the expense of all the others.

As for that trope about shady deals, Houston media chased down a Republican county commissioner, who just took a plea bargain on improper gifts from people with business before the County, and they're also after a Democratic city councilman for running some sort of "pay to play" scheme, and they just had a grand jury look at another council member for other improprieties (they no-billed her).

So, how's Holder Justice coming on those charges of improper influence-peddling in Chicago, and the New Black Panthers, and Gunwalker? How's our federal prosecution machine doing, against the defense attorneys for Jose Padilla and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed?

Did we ever get to the bottom of the Shirley Sherrod fraud, and why more black farmers filed suit againt the Agriculture Department than actually exist in America?
