Herman Cain upsets Rick Perry in Florida straw poll

In a severe embarrassment for the Republican presidential frontrunner, businessman Herman Cain tripped up Gov. Rick Perry in a straw ballot of Florida Republican activists Saturday.

The vote has no bearing on the choice of a 2012 nominee but, along with recent campaign events, is likely to increase the chances that the Republican presidential contest will tighten. It comes on the heels of a poor performance by Perry in a Florida debate Thursday night that disappointed conservatives, including delegates who came to Orlando expecting to back the Texas governor.

Cain received 37% of the vote, more than twice as many as Perry, who made by far the most extensive effort, but finished a distant second with 15%. He barely edged out Mitt Romney, who did not compete here, at 14%.

I can think of few things more absurd than the thought of Mitt Romney asking his delegates to vote for someone other than him.

LOL he'd have to have a lot of them vote for someone else.

I’m trying. His site appears to be overwhelmed at the moment.

Ignore my post #116...I was pinging someone to your post about the electoral college vote if both P and VP are from the same state, and I accidentally pinged you to your own post. LOL

Ditto!

Congrats to Herman Cain! I like Cain and I'm happy that a conservative won.

I got to his site but the donate link keeps giving me the “site temporarily unavailable”. I take this as a good sign. I hope his site is overwhelmed right now.

Herman certainly did better in the debate than Perry.

it is not just Perry who was upset but the entire list of nominees. We must remember we are still very early in the process. It used to be campaigns got underway after Labor Day. There is a long, long way to go with many millions of dollars to be spent to keep the coffers of the media overflowing. IMO the msm has been pushing the primary season earlier and earlier to bring in maximum amount of bucks - it is all business.

First, I think Cain would be a somewhat better nominee than Romney and a much better president than Romney or most of the other candidates. He’s one of my top choices, along with DeMint, Bachmann, and one other prominent politician. Second, the fact that so many people are taking turns edging out Romney suggests to me that (1) Romney is a terrible choice politically, and (2) voters are waiting for someone who is not yet officially in the race. Can half of us on FR guess who the non-candidate is who keeps the race churning? You betcha!

I love Cain but if he wins I might sleep through his term.

I love to hear him talk...his voice is relaxing, almost hypnotic and makes me sleepy.

Excellent point. Why on Earth did she go after Perry and not Romney? She hasn’t even put herself in contention for a VP slot.

And, yeah ... Ed Rollins ...

Poor Rick. He done stepped in it. Calling conservatives heartless racists sure helped him, not.

Given the overall national mood, the Hermaninator wouldn’t need to split off that much. If he just takes 12%, that pretty much dooms 0bama’s chances.

True. The dirty little secret is that the Dems can't win without a complete sweep of the black vote. Which is pretty funny because the Dems basically wine and dine the blacks during the campaign and then after the election (i.e. getting electorally laid so to speak), they kick them out of bed until the next time they need the black voters to "put out".

I find the pandering to be offensive, but the way the [black] voters lap it up is embarrassing, sickening and just plain pathetic. Anything to avoid owning up to personal responsibility.

That said, I still don't think any (conservative) black Republican is going to peel off even that much. Free stuff and get even with Whitey is what sells to that demographic.

Never. If Cain starts to look dangerous, look for a ton of MSM attacks on how he isn’t really “black”.
