Rick Perry's campaign stuggles to explain straw poll loss

Reporting from Tampa, Fla. -- A black, threatening cloud hung low over the Orange County Convention Center on Saturday evening as top members of Gov. Rick Perry’s brain trust left a place their candidate would love to forget.

At best half showed up, leaving tables groaning with uneaten bagels, scrambled eggs, bacon and fruit cocktail. At the end of the governor’s rather perfunctory eight-minute speech, the breakfast crowd offered a rather perfunctory round of applause, the first public clue that all might not be going well in Perryville.

The Texan’s campaign fielded the largest cadre of volunteers and paid staff at the event. His staffers, wires dangling from their ears (a touch, and expense, that no other campaign matched), were very much in evidence Saturday inside the convention hall, as they distributed signs and buttonholed delegates. Another visible sign of the considerable investment Perry made in Florida: signage that included a huge banner, hanging in the foyer of the convention hall, which greeted the 3,000 delegates, starting on debate night; Perry’s campaign paid an undisclosed sum to the state party for the privilege.

Definitely. No wonder he had "heartless" on his mind. His own peeps!

I would have stayed to eat, and I know Chris Christie would have not left that stuff just sit there.

Florida voters have no heart. Imagine the cruelty of wanting a winner instead of a weasel.

Bilbo “The Anklebreaker” Baggins entered the room and told the folks what they were gonna do.

Perry got kneecapped by a blackjack. Romney got his toes smashed by a beer stein. The rest just ran away.

Worse. In one debate he got too deeply involved in the question of needles stuck into 12 year old girls ~ definitely not a top level national concern ~ but still a "test" to be failed.

Then, there was the instate tuition problem. He had the big picture political stuff out of the way ~ the legislature did it to him ~ he said ~ like Romney said the legislature and the courts forced him down and made him accept gay marriage and a ruinously expensive medical insurance plan that's bankrupting Massachusetts and actually causing people to move out of state!

Gad, this guy had the same problems as the other guy ~ so far Huntsman hasn't blamed the Utah legislature for anything ~ if he knows what's good for him he won't either (Bwahahahaha!!!!!!!).

Caine provided Conservatives with short, pithy, very clear RED MEAT ~ he knew the needle in the fanny stuff wasn't game and neither was the "Legislature Made Me Do It" ~ and you best believe he knew you can't blame the Board of Directors!

These guys are running for President ~ which means they must instantly be able to differentiate between those things that are just dross, and those which are slime, to find those few shining nuggets of truth that must be pursued for the sake of the Nation.

The Perry collapse rivals Ed Muskie’s tearful breakdown and exceeds the Dukakis tank ride.

Good grief, LA Times breaks out the drama! He made a mistake, he made a rookie error but it's not the end of the world. Get in some good people to work with him, add some polish and he'll be fine.

Both he and his people had to know he wouldn't do much after the debate performance, it will get better. I remember how people cringed after Sarah had her interview with Katie Couric and how everyone went on and on about how dumb she was during debate prep. HA! Dumb like a fox. She just needed a bit of polish and she got that real quick.
