Illegal Mexicans? I wouldn’t go that far. Being Governor of Texas for a decade under the GOP banner had to have included a lot of support from conservative, GOP, US citizens.

I have never seen a candidate who has blown such good fortune in such a brief period of time. As soon as Perry announced his candidacy, he quickly assumed the first place position in the polls and he seemed unbeatable. But then he opened his mouth and over the next 3 debates he went from bad to worse. He holds several positions that alienate conservatives, but his awful stance on in-state tuition for the children of illegals is a dagger straight to the heart of his campaign. However, he hasn't seemed to back down from that position, and he hasn't even made a convincing argument as to why this is a sound policy.

I think Cain’s win in the Florida straw poll is the result of a protest vote. Republicans in Florida seem to be fed up with Romney and Perry. They are giving Perry a vote of no confidence, but at the same time they aren't willing to make Romney the beneficiary of that dynamic. But judging from Bachmann’s 1% in the straw poll, and factoring in the performance of the other conservatives in the race (such as Santorum’s 10% and Gingrich’s 8% results), we know that conservatism alone wasn’t the only motivating force present in the results. By that standard, Bachmann’s 1% showing is beyond pitiful.

Cain’s win today tell us more about an angry GOP base that isn’t gonna take it anymore. No more Obama-like-talk or the so-called 'compassionate conservatism.' Republicans are hungry for problem solving candidates with practical solutions based on conservative principles, and neither Romney-the-flip-flopper nor Perry-the-big-heart can deliver.
