The number of illegal immigrant college students paying in-state tuition and receiving financial aid at Texas' public colleges and universities continues to climb, according to state higher education records.
During the fall semester, 12,138 students - about 1 percent of all Texas college students - benefited from the state law granting in-state tuition, according to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Most of the immigrants among those students are illegal, and some others are not legal permanent residents or U.S. citizens.
Texas awarded about $33.6 million in state and institutional financial aid to those students between fall 2004 and summer 2008.
In 2001, Texas became the first state in the country to pass an in-state tuition law. The law created a national movement. Many private universities also now award aid to illegal immigrant students.

AN advantage. Allowed my fury to cloud my vision. Sorry.
“Texas awarded about $33.6 million in state and institutional financial aid to those students (illegals) between fall 2004 and summer 2008.”
Anybody against this is hard hearted. Texas taxpayers are truly compassionate conservatives. /s
I like to be in America!
O.K. by me in America!
Everything free in America
For a small fee in America!
Yup. And that’s what we’ve been screaming about.
wow I thought they had the in state tuition and had to get a loan for that .
As a legal immigrant from England I’m pissed over this I might as well said piss off, not pay the fees, do the interviews and paperwork etc.
Actually I would rather had done it my way as I feel more proud to have worked to become an American and respect this country and her laws.
And this American thanks you and welcomes you.
If this doesn’t sink Perry’s chances to be the Republican nominee, I don’t know what will. I refuse to vote for anyone who promotes this kind of disrespect for the taxpayers and citizens of this country.
But you don’t understand the “special relationship” that Texas and Mexico has had over the years. /s
But lot's of poster's here lately have been claiming the illegals have to pay for this reward.
It's actually a DOUBLE REWARDS program...on MY dime :(
And when and if they graduate, they will have another leg up on your children—they will apply for jobs and will fill out affirmative action forms that specifically ask them if they’re Hispanic. They will be given hiring preferences over non-Hispanic whites. Believe me this is happening. That question is now the first one being asked on new affirmative action forms—”Are you Hispanic?”
The Perry supporters will attack the messenger, attack the message and deny that it’s the truth, then hit the next thread with the same violence.
I don’t understand what those people see in this man or why they’re so passionately supporting him.
All I can come up with is that they really don’t believe that anyone else can beat Romney. I know many of these FReepers and they are honest, passionate conservatives. It frankly stuns me how many of them are willing to settle for Perry when we have two other very good conservatives who’ve thrown their hat in the race.
Oh where oh where did the Perry-Boys I mean Perry-Bots go?
I didn’t get much support on another thread, I have another concern...there is intense competition for admissions, seats in crowded classes, work study, scholarships, and loans/grants. Why do hispanic illegals get preference over legal immigrants, legal foreign students, and US citizens?
Thank you I appreciate that.
I’d love to get to an obama event and tell him how I came here and why is it fair for those who break the law, disrespect the country to stay.
I don’t care who ya are... that’s funny!
:)
(good comeback! I can respect humor!)
“... I feel more proud to have worked to become an American...”
Your outlook and hard work is what makes YOU an American, Manc!
I think that is something many aren’t thinking about. The fact is that most universities dont have an endless enrollment. They only accept a certain number of students each year. There are hundreds, if not thousands of US citizens that are turned down in Texas every year by the school of their choice. Some of those positions are taken by ILLEGAL ALIENS!
I sincerely feel for those across the border who are unfortunate. In a perfect world, they would have the same opportunities. But the world isnt perfect, nor is their conduct when they willingly break our laws. Theyre not forced to break our laws, they choose to. And currently, when they do, they take positions from those US citizens that dont break the law. Does that sound even remotely fair?
For crying out loud folks, its not like were sending the illegals to the gas chamber, were simply telling them to play by the rules like scores of thousands of immigrants do every year, or they cant play. Simple.
