ST. LOUIS Early Monday morning, a 47-year-old man became the second burglary suspect to die at the hands of his victim in the past week.
The man, whose name has not been released by police, was fatally shot in the shoulder just before 1 a.m. at a home in the 5600 block of Maple Avenue.
Police said the property owner, who is 66, was not living at the home, which had been burglarized during the weekend. The property owner had returned there after midnight Sunday to check on the residence and caught the man inside the home in the city's West End neighborhood, southwest of Page and Union boulevards.
The property owner told police that he ordered the intruder not to move, but the intruder started coming toward him. Police did not identify the property owner.
"In fear for his safety, the victim fired a shot at the suspect, striking him in the shoulder," according to a St. Louis Police Department summary of the shooting.
The man died at a hospital.
No charges have been filed against the property owner. Katie O'Sullivan, a police department spokeswoman, said police believe the shooting appears to be justified.
About 72 hours earlier, a similar fatal shooting happened in St. Louis' Fox Park neighborhood. Police also say that shooting appears justified, O'Sullivan said Monday.

Justice Served.
So the goblin died of a shoulder wound?
Sounds like the bullet entered a blood vessel and then migrated to the heart and then “GAAAAACK!”
Some range time for the homeowner will help along with lots of congrats.
Another one?! Another??
Boy, those burglars have got to be more careful!
(heh-heh-heh.)
Award that citizen an FR medal!
It is entirely possible for a 12 gauge to the shoulder to be fatal without a bullet migrating to the heart... ;-)
Words to memorize, FRiends. Nice shooting, citizen...another dead scumbag!
Good shooting, Citizen. Civilization thanks you.
He almost certainly hit the brachial artery.
