Unfortunately, in many cases, there isn't good physical control of the voting machines. For real security, the machines should provide attachment points for a reasonably generous number of padlocks, such that opening the machine would require removing all of the locks. Each election judge could inspect the machine, and then install his or her own lock before the polls opened, and leave the locks on until the polls closed. Otherwise, a "voter" who has private unmonitored access to the machine could--possibly with a key supplied by corrupt government officials--open the machine, wreak mischief, and close the machine back up.
Johnston, the leader of the assessment team, told Salon: The machines themselves need to be designed better, with the idea that people may be trying to get into them. If youre just thinking about the fact that someone can try to get in, you can design the seals better, for example.
He added: This is a national security issue. It should really be handled by the Department of Homeland Security.
This is one more step in the loss of our rights, and BOTH Parties are guilty. This needs corrected along with voter ID. We need to know voters are eligible and that our votes are not manipulated. The Parties obviously want to maintain control of elections. I’d rather have paper ballots (and a purple thumb), and that can be kept indefinitely, than these voting machines that are smoke and mirrors.
