Thomas Sowell: Attacks on Perry unwarranted, unwise
Standard Times San Angelo ^ | Sept. 27, 2011 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 09/27/2011 3:14:20 PM PDT by Clairity

The biggest mischaracterization of Perry's position has been on immigration. The fact that he has more confidence in putting "boots on the ground" along the border, instead of relying on a fence that can be climbed over or tunneled under where there is no one around, is a logistical judgment, not a question of being against border control.

Texas Rangers already have been put along the border to guard the places where the federal government has failed to guard it. Former Sen. Rick Santorum's sound-bite attempts to paint Perry as soft on border control have apparently been politically successful, judging by polls.

But his repeated interrupting of Perry's presentation of his case during the recent debate is the kind of cheap political trick that contributes nothing to public understanding and much to public misunderstanding.

I have far more questions about those who would blow this error up into something that it is not. Error-free leaders don't exist — and we don't want to end up settling for a warm body.

Ultimately, this is not about Perry. It is about a process that can destroy any potential leader, even when the country needs a new leader with a character that the "gotcha" attackers demonstrate they do not have.

“They’re still coming through by the thousands. “

BS. I see far fewer here in Mohave County. And BTW, I worked at the paper up here for many years and thus know quite a few of the people involved with ‘illegal’ matters because of it. They all say that the laws here are forcing illegals to go home and there are fewer of them. Though I am no longet employed there, we keep in touch.

One of us is wrong.

No, they’re not passing laws that make it easier for the illegals, they are passing laws that make it safer for Texans. That was their call, as Americans we have to respect the fact that each state has a right to address a problem as they see fit. That’s what we did with SB1070 and we’re paying a hefty price for that in attorney fees and bad publicity (with I am fine with) because that’s what WE decided was best. When other states said we didn’t have that right we told them .....well.....how to make a rope wet. Therefore, we should have the same respect for Texas. The law was passed in 2001 it’s been in effect for 10 years.

It’s been fun ML, but there’s no point in a one way conversation. None of the Perry supporters will make an attempt to address the issues I posted. That is obvious.

It speaks volumes as to your collective position.

I am just pointing out to you that the Tohono corridor is off limits to the Feds.
BP cant go in there because it is a sovereign Indian nation.
The drug cartels run right trough there from Puerto Penasco and Nogales to Tucson.

The Federal Gov shut us down on carrying guns in the Coronado national forest (hauchucas) so now that has open up as well.

Well it certainly isn't me. You may see fewer coming up there, but I live in Phoenix and they are still busting them by the thousands. Ask Joe and Babeau. Good grief, just because they're not strolling down your street doesn't mean they aren't coming. Some of it has slowed but not due to the laws, it's more do to the violence of the cartels and their border wars. The other part is the unemployment. Yes, the law has helped some, but it is in no way the total solution, but we still had a right as a state to make that decision.

New Mexico, right next door is an even bigger problem because they issue drivers licenses to them!

BTW, Joe just did another bust a few days back, what do you think he was picking up?

I believe I speak for most conservatives that know what this guy is all about when I say that Perry is not the candidate we need right now.

Beliefs and reality differ. No one hired you to define what candidates conservatives should support. Look at Perry's stance on all conservative issues. Abortion Gun Rights States rights are THE tool to rein in the Federal governments over reaching intrusion into our lives. Reducing regulation Weaning Americans off government

“If Palin came out with Perry’s position, I’d rail her just as hard as I am Perry. Because I have done my homework.”

It’s clear that you have NOT done your homework.

Perry wants secure borders and he signed a veto-proof bill in Texas giving in-state tuition to children of illegal aliens, who lived in Texas for at least 3 years and finished high school. Perry has always been against the Federal Dream Act, which IS amnesty.

Palin IS for amnesty.

Sarah Palin on Immigration

Q: Do you then favor an amnesty for the 12 million undocumented immigrants?

A: No, I do not. Not total amnesty. You know, people have got to follow the rules. We have got to make sure that there is equal opportunity and those who are here legally should be first in line for services being provided and those opportunities that this great country provides.

Q: So you support a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants?

A: I do because I understand why people would want to be in America. To seek the safety and prosperity, the opportunities, the health that is here. It is so important that yes, people follow the rules so that people can be treated equally and fairly in this country.

You are in error for several reasons. First, the “benefit” under discussion - the Texas Dream Act - is not a benefit at all in the way the word is commonly understood - a gratuity - because anyone who falls under one of the categories in the Texas law must still pay full in-state tuition which, last time I checked, was more expensive than tuition at many, if not most, Mexican universities/colleges.

It flies in the face of reason and common sense that someone would plan to cross the brutal desert to jump the US/Mexico border just to come to the US in order to pay much, much higher tuition fees if, by some lucky chance, their child happens to qualify for in-state tuition.

I used to lived about 6 mi from Naco, and I never even used to worry about locking my doors.
We could carry in the Coronado forest and we never saw illegals up there.
The drug cartels weren’t an issue.
Migrants just wanted to get up to Phoenix to get jobs.

Things have changed and we need to change federal laws.

Actually, that's true, Arizona's Constitution requires that we provide a reasonable tuition for our citizens. We're barely make it and then only with the help of out of state (and country) tuitions.

New Mexico is never mentioned even though they have in-state tuition and issue drivers licenses.

Actually, we do here too. I sat at the DMV one day waiting to renew my license and I can't tell you how many people I saw get their license and then turn it over to their "patron". I reported it to the officer standing there and he said there was nothing he could do about it.

I know you think everyone is ignoring your points, but the fact is, you are not being very clear on what it is you want to know. You have to admit, that everyone isn’t ignorning you. If everyone is marching in one direction and you are marching in another, the chances are it’s you that is going the wrong way. Try being a little more clear.

Resigning from office because of a little heat? If that’s the case, then you sure don’t want her as President.

At no point did I say they had stopped. But if they aren’t making it up this far as often and in fact those once here left/are leaving, what does that tell you.

Sure they are still up here too, but the busts are lessening as there are FEWER to bust.

So don’t tall me that STATE/LOCAL laws making it harder for illegals to stay do not work and we must rely on FedGov. They started self deporting after 1070 and the rest.

Why? Not because FedGov did anything to help. It’s because AZ said ENOUGH to laws helping illegals stay here. And the more of those laws we get rid of, the more will self deport.

All the tools in the toolbox. Just like ‘all of the above energy policy”. Popular and VERY effective when actually employed.
