Christie's Calif. Speech May Not Quash Rumors [Except Romney and Perry: Others "Fringe" Candidates]

Christie's Calif. Speech May Not Quash Rumors

Jae C. Hong

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie didn't say yes, but he didn't say no explicitly, so his speech Tuesday night on "American exceptionalism" still may fan rumors that he's wavering on a possible run for the presidency.

Christie didn't say no, but pointed listeners to a video clip on the Politico website that combined a series of clips of him telling various interviewers that he was not running and would not run for president.

Politico called it the "least direct answer he has given to date" on whether he would run. On FOX News, political adviser Karl Rove called Christie’s speech a road map for a Republican candidate on how to campaign for the presidency, (snip)

"When it comes to running for president, you don't pick the time. The time picks you," said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute in New Jersey. "If his burning desire is to be president, then the time is now. You don't know what the environment will be in 2016 or 2020."

(snip) Despite Christie's avowed disinterest in the White House, longtime adviser Tom Kean gave the Christie-for-president movement a boost Monday when he said Christie was "very seriously" considering running.

York Post Republican royalty such as former first lady Barbara Bush and former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger were wooing Christie.

Dante Scala, chair of the Department of Political Science at the University of New Hampshire, said elites want Christie because they "feel they can do business with him."

Looking at the presumed front-runners, they do not see former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney as a real conservative and do not trust Texas Governor Rick Perry, Scala said. They see the others as fringe candidates who cannot beat Obama.

The RINOstablishment wants a Romney-Perry 2 man race. They would be very very happy with that.

That is why conservatives are not happy with it.

It’s not too late for Christie or Palin to run. I want to see them both run, though not for the same reason.

Both the speech and the question and answer session that followed were mesmerizing.

Detailed, pointed, passionate — just terrific.

If Barbara Bush and Kissinger are wooing him, no thanks. I like Christie...a lot...but I have trouble seeing him running a national Republican campaign. I would pay max dollar to watch him debate the current chump in the White House, though. That would be a blood bath.

Christie is very liberal. I wouldn’t vote for him. I agree with your comments.

Was able to catch the speech on youtube. Still waiting for the Q&A.

Here's the bottom line: Christie is talented. But the fact that a rookie governor still in his first term is such a standout demonstrates the shocking, damning, pathetic void of leadership that is the GOP. The DEMs are what they are, but the GOP is a disgraceful wasteland of leadership.

It's there for all eyes to see. It's really a shame. Perry is a stammering, preening dunce. Romney is a glad-handing shuckster. The rest are inexperienced Quixotes. It's a %^^&$# disgrace.

I wonder if Prof. Dante Scala thinks that in addition to Cain, Bachmann, Santorum, Gingrich, Paul, and Hunstman, that the others consider that Palin is also a fringe candidate?

Scala said. “They see the others as fringe candidates who cannot beat Obama.”

I’m so tired of the Christie is liberal nonsense. Hes is Gov. of NJ and has proved so far to be more conservative than my Gov. in PA.

“still may fan rumors that he’s wavering on a possible run for the presidency.”

MSNBC must be just trying to stir the pot.

I watched the speech and the Q&A session afterwards and Christie was absolutely clear that he is not running.

If he were going to announce, there would have been no better venue than a speech at the Ronald Reagan Library.

Christie was absolutely unequivocal. He is not running.

Found it boring. More rah rah and less specifics. Reading it off is not a very good method of delivery.

Fill me in on how Christie is doing that. He hasn't eliminated one public employee job. He balanced the budget by raising fees and taxes. Also used future carbon credit sales and stimulus money to close the gap. Spending has raise 6% over all in the state and 10% in the executive branch since he took over. There are now 35 people in his office making 100K as opposed to Corzines 24.

Oh BTW, thanks to Christie Creme, if you don't use your gift card in one years time in NJ, the state gets the money. I don't recall any of these things going on with Corbetts administration.

Some people will never be satisfied because they are looking for perfection.
I will take anybody in the field against Obama. he is the worst president in our history. All of our candidates are successful people and any one of them with a good staff could begin to undo the damage Obama has done.

Not to mention his anti-gun thingy. His concept of the second amendment belies his overall conservative argument.
