ADL Applauds Israel PM Netanyahu's Speech At UN - Says Abbas Peace Song 'Rings Hollow'

By Joel Leyden
Israel News Agency

New York --- September 28, 2011 .... Days after the Palestinian Authority, Iran, Syria, Turkey, Hamas and much of the Arab world attacked the legitimacy of Israel at the UN one can still find several Jewish organizations standing up for Israel.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) embraced Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech to the UN General Assembly, in which he unequivocally repeated Israel's desire for and commitment to peace with the Palestinians. Netanyahu again agreed for the creation of a peace seeking Palestinian state through negotiations.

The ADL, in a news release, stated that Netanyahu's words stood in stark contrast to those of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, whose expression of a desire for peace with Israel "rings hollow amid his strident accusations against Israel."

"Prime Minister Netanyahu carefully and comprehensively set forth the steps Israel has taken over the years to achieve peace and reiterated Israel's readiness to make painful compromises when the Palestinians acknowledge a simple truth - Israel is the Jewish state," said Robert G. Sugarman, ADL National Chair and Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director in a joint statement.

The ADL added: "In stark contrast to Netanyahu's speech, PA President Mahmoud Abbas' expression of a desire for peace and his claim that his UN initiative was not to delegitimize Israel ring hollow amid his strident accusations against Israel, maximalist demands and adamant refusal to recognize Israel as a Jewish state. Abbas peppered his speech with incendiary accusations against Israel and aimed to reposition the Israel Palestinian conflict not as a territorial conflict, but a religious and racial conflict."

"Netanyahu effectively made a strong case for an immediate return to negotiations. Netanyahu's suggestion that he and Abbas meet 'here and now' in New York represents the polar opposite of Abbas' message to the world. The international community should urge Abbas to take up this offer."

Just prior to his speech before the General Assembly, Abbas provided UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon with a formal application for "Palestine" to become a full member of the United Nations despite appeals from leading members of the international community to return to direct negotiations and refrain from unilateral and confrontational action.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.

The ADL has worked closely with law enforcement for decades to carry out their mission of protecting both the Jewish people and all others from extremism, hatred and injustice. Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, the scale of ADL's work with law enforcement has increased significantly and the greatest demand for ADL expertise has been in the area of training for law enforcement. As the foremost non-governmental authority on domestic terrorism, extremism, organized hate groups and hate crimes, the ADL has been the leading non-government organization training police. In 2010 alone, the ADL trained more than 10,500 law enforcement officers from all over the US.

A Facebook group, Vote NO to a Hamas led UN Palestine Terror State, has been established. Please join it if you believe in peace and democracy in the Middle East.

The ADL exemplifies the old adage that every broken clock in the junkyard has the right time twice a day.

Yes, their position on the recent machinations at the UN and Netanyahu vs. Abbas is worthy of some positive recognition. But the eighth and ninth paragraphs of the article read like an ADL press release, a puff piece which is probably "boiler plate" material for any memo that comes out of their office.

The more general problem with the ADL is that it too often overlooks or minimizes antisemitism on the left in the US, including the Obama administration. This is a most serious flaw since the left, because of its sympathy to forced wealth redistribution and radical Islam, is rife with antisemitism and represents the greatest political threat to the survival of Israel and the Jewish people in the western world today.

There is much good, powerful efforts on behalf of the ADL - including Black Ops - the public is not aware of.
Bless them in their 100 year-old efforts!

I fail to see how FDR should be a "hero" to anyone interested in fighting antisemitism in the US. His record on the issue leaves much to be desired. For instance, FDR, as a Harvard alum, participated in Harvard's adoption of a quota admissions system, which deliberately restricted the number of Jewish students admitted to Harvard.

See Justiceseeker's post #4.

What ever little good it might do, the ADL is primarily a left wing extremist organization that promotes political correctness in the name of fighting anti-Semitism and does all in its power to keep Jews voting for liberal Democrats. And while the ADL has always been liberal, under Foxman it's gone stark-raving moonbat bananas.

The only "kosher" way to fight anti-Semitism is promoting the Noachide Laws--not pushing "gay marriage."

The ADL as an organization in the Jewish community can be considered historically as an analog to the NAACP in the black community.

Both were founded about a century ago for very legitimate purposes and both did laudable work in combating bigotry and discrimination for the majority of their respective histories. (The impetus for the founding of the ADL in 1913 was the notorious Leo Frank case.)

But in recent decades, both have been captured by extreme leftist elements which have grossly perverted their goals and priorities.

Awesome speech. He just made a tiny error when he said that Palestinian racist, Jew-free intentions - declaration was made "here in NY," it was actually made in DC [by Maen Areikat on Sep. 13].
