Hispanic population outstrips estimates

WASHINGTON, March 15 (UPI) -- At 38.7 million, the Hispanic population in the United States is larger than expected, an analysis of the 2010 Census by the Pew Hispanic Center indicates.
The 2010 Census counted nearly 600,000 more Hispanics than estimated in 28 states, the Pew Center said Tuesday.
The gap between the 2010 count and estimates of the Hispanic population by the Census Bureau were widest in states with relatively small Hispanic populations, Pew said.
It was more than 10 percent higher than expected in Alabama, Louisiana and Kansas.
"Hispanics are in some places growing faster than we had thought," said Pew demographer Jeffrey Passel. "This sort of broad pattern suggests immigration into these new areas was a bit higher."
Data released from 33 states indicated Hispanics accounted for 58 percent of population growth in the past decade.

Historic migrations have never been stopped in the past.Europeans effectively started putting themselves out of the civilization business with Two World Wars, the weakening of the family in favor of an imagined "higher standard of living," and the replacement of Christianity with Socialism.

The Europeans got in trouble the moment they no longer had an outlet valve to send excess population, which was not long before the World War I. They simply don't have the landmass and resources to support large populations and large families. They can move everybody who is not directly working into agriculture into cities, but it's still not going to fix their problems - they will eventually run really low on resources, and then God only knows what will happen. North America will eventually have the same problem - too many people, not enough resources, although the US and Canada has a lot more time than Europe did. Some think that the birthrights among certain groups with high birthrates will decline as they become assimilated into American culture, but I'm not buying it one bit. Too many people who come here aren't jumping into the melting pot like in years past and are instead preserving their culture and language.

They no longer had an outlet valve to send excess population,Sure they did. They had North and South America. What led to the large European Population Explosions were the advances, no matter how slight, made in public health. For example, the newly unified Kingdom of Italy was able to control malaria by passing out cheap, state monopoly quinine, and the southern rural populations skyrocketed. The same thing happened to a lesser extent in the south of France. As far as food resources go, modern Spain, France, and Italy are major food exporters
However, it is misleading to compare European numbers in dealing with the Third World. Perhaps 6 million Italians emigrated to North America from 1890 to 1920. 4 million Irish. 3 million Jews. A million or so Swedes and Norwegians. But, more than 35 million Mexicans have come to the US since 1965. They, and other Latinos and Hispanics are the largest ethnic group in the country.
They are assimilating us. Not vice-versa. This "were all immigrants" stuff is all crap. This, as other posters have noted, is a mass migration. We also must face the fact that an important part of the Mexican national psyche is the drive to take back the Southwest, not that they ever did a damn thing with it when they had it. In fact, they never even settled it.
The Mexican War is portrayed as a war of aggression, (which frankly, in a weird way, probably was, not that small weak countries normally go around picking fights with big neighbors!) but at the time, Mexico was larger than the US, had a larger population, and a much more numerous and well-equipped army, complete with artillery and a huge, well equipped cavalry. WE were the underdog, a long shot with the London turf accountants.... and the European Bond Markets.

I was talking about those countries starting to be closed off. But your point about public health is very well taken though. The improvements made between my grandfather's time (born before 1900) and my time are staggering. And the point about the numbers.

Whether they are assimilating us or bringing their culture and language with them and retaining it, I agree with you that the result is the same.
I'm in Texas, it's been a minority-majority state for some time, and it won't be too many years before Hispanics pass up Caucasians. 7% difference or so back in 2005, wouldn't surprise me if that's changed by a point. I sometimes think that is why some Republican politicians in Texas are so moderate these days. They probably pay a lot more attention to demographics than most of us since their jobs depend upon it.

Just saw your post...My son’s back is covered by Garcia, Boyd, Hogan, Collins, (a Latino, a Black, and I’m not sure what else). My son is Hungarian, English, Scottish, Welsh, and Native American. They all get along and as long as they love him, I will love them.
By the time I am 70 I will have to really learn spanish. Does Rosetta Stone work for the elderly?

I had some Spanish. Not as hard as French - they spell the words the way are pronounced.
Learning a new language - ANY language as we get older improves our memory and mind.
Thanks for the encouragement.
